Adding a Gmail account
- Select Outlook > Preferences > Accounts.
- Click the plus (+) sign > New Account.
- Type your email address > Continue.
- Type your password > Add Account.
- Click Continue.
- Sign-in to your Gmail account within Outlook for Mac.
- Select an account to sign in.
- Type the account password.
How to Manually Setup Gmail in Outlook

Gmail allows access to its IMAP and POP mail servers so you can set up the email software on your computer or mobile device to work with the service. Most premium and some free email applications offer both IMAP and POP email compatibility, while other free email programs may offer only the POP email service.
Not to worry: Outlook can be configured to work with Gmail. But before you can configure Outlook to work with Gmail, you must configure Gmail to work with Outlook. To do that, you must enable the IMAP protocol for your Gmail account. Click Forwarding and POP/IMAP to bring up the POP and IMAP settings.

Setting up email in Gmail on Android

Between POP3 and IMAP, it's personal preference. IMAP interacts with the original copy on GMail's servers. For example, if you move a POP3 message to a “Old Mail” folder, it'll only move the message on your phone. If you do it on an IMAP connection, it will move it to the same folder/label on GMail itself.
2 Answers. Unless you're using a third-party mail client that uses IMAP, no, there's no point in having IMAP turned on. In fact, to keep your mailbox more secure, you should keep it off. IMAP is for reading Gmail messages in other mail clients, like Microsoft Outlook and Apple Mail.
Activate IMAP in Gmail
