A topcoat should be trim. It should reach to just above your knee, and it should be the same size as the suit you wear (not a size larger). You can be like this fellow and go for a dark single-breasted version (it never fails), or maybe you want something bolder.
The Difference between a Topcoat and an Overcoat. An overcoat is a long winter coat used to cover up your clothing, usually in the form of a suit. The length of an overcoat extends below the knees. On the other hand, a topcoat has the same functionality but the length usually ends before the knees.
Don't overthink what to wear it with — it goes with most everything. The versatile pea coat works with casual get-ups to slightly dressier attire. It looks good over jeans, khakis, and wool trousers; sweaters, turtlenecks, and dress shirts; and leather boots, brogues, and canvas sneakers.
When to wear it
Layering your topcoat with a denim jacket, vest, or cardigan is definitely a chic approach to styling this form of outerwear. Avoid wearing unkempt shoes or ripped jeans, although jeans are completely acceptable especially if you are keeping it casual.Top coating is a transparent or translucent coat of paint applied over the underlying material as a sealer. Of all the evaporative finishes, lacquer (nitrocellulose and acrylic, water- and solvent-based) fare the best in terms of overall durability. Oil-based polyurethane is the most durable finish you can apply by hand, and catalyzed lacquer and varnish are the most durable sprayed finishes.

Polyurethane finish is basedon both oil and water while polycrylic is a water-based finish. That's just one example of a difference between polyurethane and polycrylic paint.
There are many different types of topcoats, and each is a little different.
- Polyurethane. Polyurethane is most typically used on stained wood and gives a very durable finish.
- Velvet Finishes Protect. My new favorite furniture paint is Velvet Finishes.
- Furniture wax.
- Polycrylic.
- Clear topcoat spray.
- Some glazes.
Then apply mineral spirits to a rag and wipe off your loose dust. At this point, you will have one coat of finish with some scratches in it. Next, apply your second coat, Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane, with a natural bristle brush, not a foam brush. A foam brush leaves air bubbles in the finish.
All General Finishes water based topcoats and wood stains are ready to spray from the container without additives with the exception of Conversion Varnish. If necessary, in hot or dry climates, reduce 10 to 15% with General Finishes Extender to extend the open time.
Brush the sealer on with a natural-bristle brush using long, even strokes. Be sure to catch any runs. If you plan to stain the work surface, be sure to follow the directions on the can. Whether the stain you use is oil-based or water-based, be sure the surface is clean and dry before you brush on the seal coat.
The top coat is the last layer applied in the manicure process. The top coat acts as a sealer to the colored polish. When the polish is sealed, it does not chip as often. In top coat nail polishes, the ingredient nitrocellulose is used to create a high shine, glossy appearance.
Water-based polyurethane contains less odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) than its oil-based counterpart, so less hard on your lungs and your nose. It dries faster, as well. However, it's not as resistant to high temperatures or water. It doesn't tolerate high heat as well as oil-based polyurethane, however.
Place your hand, palm towards you, against your chest and slide it under the lapels. Form a fist. The jacket should become taught across the chest. If the jacket wrinkles, or pulls across the chest, or you are unable to form a fist when the top or middle button are fastened then it is too tight.
Medium length (mid-thigh) coats are good for the more petite, where you want more length for warmth, but not so long they overwhelm your frame. A 3/4 length coat (one that is just above the knee) is flattering for most average height people. If you're petite a slightly shorter (medium length) coat is often better.
Insert your hand into your suit jacket when it's buttoned up. If you struggle to get your hand in, your jacket is too tight. If your hand fits beneath your suit jacket snugly without excess room, the fit is right.
If your coat is too tight in the arms or across the chest, you're going to have a hard time with your simple daily routine. If you can do the hug but the coat feels a bit tight through the elbows or in the shoulders, it would be a good idea to try on the next size up.
