"Winter Is Coming" is the motto of House Stark, one of the Great Houses of Westeros. The meaning behind these words is one of warning and constant vigilance. The Starks, being the lords of the North, strive to always be prepared for the coming of winter, which hits their lands the hardest.
Take “winter is coming” for example. The show just started its sixth season, and the phrase has been uttered 11 times — once each by Benjen, Arya, Maester Aemon, Robb, Yoren, Catelyn, Stark Soldier and Mance, and twice by Ned, Jon and Stannis.
The continent of Westeros is long and relatively narrow, extending from Dorne in the south to the lands beyond the Wall. In the far north are the frozen Lands of Always Winter, where a large amount of land remains uncharted due to the extremely cold temperatures.
However they do have a concept of years but they aren't quite like Earth's (four seasons in one year) but is it definitely the same length, i.e. 30ish days per month, 12 months/moons?

The last winter ended on March 19th. It started December 21st.
The White Walkers are always accompanied by cold temperatures, and coming from the Lands of Always Winter, it would seem that they prefer cold climates. They might even have difficulty surviving in warmer climates.
So the world of Westeros is named Earth, just as certainly as Sandor Clegane is Sandor Clegane, but there's still a hedge in Martin's answer that prevents us from simply naming the Game of Thrones planet Earth.
Winter is arriving slowly in the show compared to the books but it is eventually coming. It is already snowing in the Riverlands and soon the snow will reach further South to King's Landing,Highgarden and even Sunspear in Dorne.

Winter in Essos would be great in terms of climate and weather. Hec, you might even think that the White Walkers won't even reach Essos since, you know, they don't like water. The cold breath of winter will freeze the seas, and the dead shall rise in the North."
Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire take place on the continents of Westeros and Essos, and occasionally on boats traveling between the two. There are also mysterious continents called Sothoryos and Ulthos — neither has ever been explored and they probably won't be.

George R.R. Martin shuts down 'absurd' rumor that he finished last 'Game of Thrones' books. George R.R. Martin is setting the record straight. Weiss to "not publish the final two books until the (TV) series has completed." "George has already written Books 6 and 7," McElhinney said at Russia's EPIC Con 2019 in April.
Seasons are for the most part controlled by the way a planet leans toward or away from its sun. Instead, it has a slight tilt that points the Northern Hemisphere toward the sun during part of the planet's orbit (causing summer) and away for another part (causing winter).
Winter Is Coming. It was said at the start and hung over the entire eight seasons of the HBO show. When the white ravens finally swirled out from the Citadel, it was official.
According to Martin, Westeros (including the area north of the Wall) is about the size of South America, and stretches about 3000 miles from the south coast of Dorne to the Wall.
Since Planet Westeros is 89.51% the size of Earth, its circumference is most likely 22,289 miles (rounding up). The Known World map is 8750 miles across by 5750 miles tall, depicting 50,312,500 square miles.
Here's a look at foods that were actually consumed in the world of Game of Thrones.

All in all, it's been somewhere between six and seven years since the events of the pilot episode and Jon Snow being named King in the North.
It's science. Before A Game of Thrones took off and the Song of Ice and Fire series became his life's work, George R.R. Martin was known primarily as a science fiction writer. And in science fiction, unlike in love and war, there are rules—laws, to be exact.
Fans of the books are well aware that season one roughly covered the material in the first book of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Game of Thrones. Season two corresponded to A Clash of Kings, and seasons three and four covered A Storm of Swords.
It's titled "Will Game of Thrones' Winter Ever Come?" The obvious answer to this question is "Yes, winter arrived in the Season 6 finale Winds of Winter." Winter finally struck Westeros at the end of Game of Thrones' sixth season
The mark on the orbital path just to the left of the Earth indicates the Earth's closest approach to the sun, which occurs in January. When the Earth is closest to the sun, it is moving fastest, so winter is the shortest season. It is the longest season, lasting 94 days.
Theory: Westeros' erratic seasons are caused by a wobbly planetary tilt. At different times throughout the year, the sun's rays hits certain parts of the planet more directly, resulting in longer days and warmer temperatures.
Earth's tilted axis causes the seasons. Throughout the year, different parts of Earth receive the Sun's most direct rays. So, when the North Pole tilts toward the Sun, it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere. And when the South Pole tilts toward the Sun, it's winter in the Northern Hemisphere.
More recently, HBO offered the showrunners more money and time to at least add more episodes to the final season, after eight seasons, the last two being shortened, was concocted as a compromise. "HBO would have been happy for the show to keep going, to have more episodes in the final season," Benioff said.
The map above clearly shows that Westeros, from the Game of Thrones TV series and the Song of Ice and Fire book series, is nothing more than Britain placed on top of an inverted Ireland. However, looks can be deceiving since there are some pretty key differences between Westeros and the British Isles.
Westeros is a continent located in the far west of the known world. It is separated from the continent of Essos by a strip of water known as the Narrow Sea. Most of the action in Game of Thrones takes place in Westeros.
The tilt of the Earth means the Earth will lean towards the Sun (Summer) or lean away from the Sun (Winter) 6 months later. In between these, Spring and Autumn will occur. The North pole always points the same way as the Earth revolves around the Sun. The Earth's movement around the sun causes the seasons.
