First, when a dealer transfers a vehicle to the buyer, the dealer has 30 days from the date of purchase in which to apply for a new title in the buyer's name. Based on the fact that you bought the vehicle about 28 days ago, the dealer is just reaching the end of this time period.
Tag Transfer. You may transfer valid tags from one vehicle to another, as long as the vehicles have the same owner. If the vehicle tags are expired, you may not transfer them. When you transfer your current tags to a different used or new vehicle a new title and registration is generated for the next vehicle.
The DMV then issues drivers 2 license plates, one of the front and one for the back. Drivers are responsible for putting those plates on their newly purchased or leased vehicle within 90 days of their purchase date. On average, license plates are received between 14 and 30 days after the sale goes through.
If a license plate is not available at the time of purchase, the dealership should give you a temporary plate that is good for 30 days. Remember, you should never drive home without one of these options on your vehicle!
The DMV will not suspend your driver license or registration if you fail to surrender the plate. The DMV recommends that you surrender any type of vehicle plate when the plate is not used to make sure that the plate is destroyed.
In anywhere from 10-15 minutes, you could go from being uninsured to having car insurance. The benefit of getting a quote online is that you can go through it at your own speed. You can take your time weighing your options.
When you buy a car, you have the right to receive the title in a timely manner. State law requires the dealer to deliver the title to you within 31 days of purchase.
If you didn't get plates at the time of purchase, call us or your dealership and inform them the plates have not arrived. Keep in mind that they will be sent to the address at which you registered the vehicle, so if you haven't gotten them in the mail, call the dealership to check the address on file.
In case you have not received your registration card and sticker within eight weeks of mailing your registration renewal fees, call the DMV at 1-800-777-0133 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday excluding holidays to verify whether your renewal was received, processed, and new registration issued.
Replacing your license plates
You'll need to submit an Application for Replacement Plates Form (REG156) either by mail or in person at one of the DMV offices. You must also pay a $16 replacement fee and a $1 reflectorized license plate fee (other fees may apply) when submitting your application. If, for some reason, a family member or friend cannot go to the DMV to register a new vehicle, you may be able to go instead. In some states, you can register a vehicle on someone else's behalf so long as you have all the proper documentation and the vehicle owner's signature on the right forms.
Temporary registration or A/F status - what they mean
All vehicles are required to be registered by law. A vehicle's temporary registration number is provided by the dealer and is valid for a month. During this period, one has to get a permanent registration number for their new car.Typically, an individual will steal a number plate in order to divert the blame of their criminal activity towards someone else. They will attach the stolen plate to their own vehicle so that they can commit any of their crimes (speed, dangerously drive, fill up petrol and drive away without paying, etc.)
Licence plate sticker and plate fees

Q: Do dealerships register cars for you? A: Yes. Most dealerships, new or used, should be able to process a vehicle's registration at the time of purchase. The dealership will charge fees for this, and those are included in the total sale or "out the door" price.
Driving with expired registration tags is illegal. In some states, so is driving without a front license plate. But without a front license plate, you've cut in half the chance of a police officer even sussing out the state in which your vehicle is registered!
