Stain Buster — Jam
- Flush the stain with cool water.
- Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon of liquid laundry detergent with one quart of warm water.

Level 1: Lemon juice or vinegar

Begin by lifting the solids out of the fibers using a spoon or spatula. Next, mix one tablespoon of liquid hand dishwashing detergent, 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar, and two cups of warm water. Use a clean white cloth, sponge, or soft bristled brush to blot the solution into the stained area.
Just rub a little bit of liquid detergent directly onto the stain, let it soak in and then run it through the washer again. Some experts swear by liquid dishwashing detergent used in the same fashion.
Remove Gelatin Stains From:
Gently wipe any excess gelatin. Mix dishwashing detergent in hot water and swish to make a great volume of suds. Dip a cloth in only the foam and apply to the stain. Rinse with a clean cloth dipped and wrung out in clear water.Baking soda, also called bicarbonate of soda or sodium bicarbonate, lifts stains from fabric. Mix 4 tbsp. of baking soda with 1/4 cup of water to make a general stain remover. (See References 1) Rub baking soda onto rust stains and fresh grease stains and use it to clean cloth diapers (see References 3).

- If the stain remains, sponge with alcohol and rinse thoroughly.
- Launder, using chlorine bleach, if safe for the fabric.
Removing Dried-On Fruit Stains
- Use a dull knife or a spoon to gently scrape away any of the fruit that remains on the fabric.
- Mix 3 tablespoons of borax or baking soda with 1 tablespoon of water to create a thick paste.
- Leave the paste on the stained area to dry for at least 15 minutes.
Soak in white vinegar mixed with dishwashing liquid before washing. Apply lemon juice to the stain and leaving in the sun to dry may work on some fabrics. Avoid using soap flakes or laundry soap directly on fruit stains which may contain tannins - apparently it can make some stains even harder to budge.
Mix a solution of warm water and oxygen-based bleach (brand names are OxiClean, Nellie's All Natural Oxygen Brightener or OXO Brite) following the package directions. Completely submerge the stained item and allow it to soak for at least four hours or overnight. Check the watermelon stain.
Removing Dried-On Fruit Stains
- Use a dull knife or a spoon to gently scrape away any of the fruit that remains on the fabric.
- Mix 3 tablespoons of borax or baking soda with 1 tablespoon of water to create a thick paste.
- Leave the paste on the stained area to dry for at least 15 minutes.
If the stain remains, soak in detergent for 30 minutes to an hour and re-launder. Old/Dried on Stains: For old or dried-on blueberry or dark-colored fruit stains, try rubbing glycerin into the stain to soften it first, and then treat as above (lemon juice method). If the stain has been ironed, it may be permanent.

Petroleum Jelly Stains
First, scrape away any excess with a spoon or dull butter knife, being careful to not damage the fabric. Next, wet the stain with isopropyl alcohol and blot the area with a clean white absorbent pad.Boiling them gets lint out, and, some feel, relaxes the fibres. The bags are meant to be re-used indefinitely. When done using them, you empty their contents into compost, then rinse them right away in cold (not hot) water, then wash them. The bags are always white to start with, but they will quickly stain.
KY Jelly is non-greasy but may dry out during use. The lubricating effects can be reactivated with the addition of water or saliva. Because glycerol is one of its ingredients, KY Jelly has a slightly sweet taste. It does not stain fabric.
- Soak the item in a solution of 1 quart warm water, 1/2 teaspoon liquid dishwashing or laundry detergent, and 1 tablespoon ammonia for 30 minutes.
- Rinse well.
- If stain persists, soak in a solution of 1 quart warm water and 1 tablespoon white vinegar for 1 hour.
- Rinse well with water and allow to dry.
If there is a stain after drying and wiping with a damp towel, you can make a Kool-Aid stain remover by mixing baking soda with water. The mixture of baking soda with a little water will produce a paste. Cover the stain area completely with the paste and let it sit for 10 minutes before wiping it away.
Apply a liberal amount of stain evenly with a brush or clean cloth. Wait 3 minutes and remove the excess stain with a clean cloth, wiping in the direction of the grain. Allow to dry 8-10 hours. To darken the color, apply additional coats of Minwax® Gel Stain repeating directions for application of first coat.
