Black-shaded hues like dusty purple, hunter green, and maroon share navy's intensity and are likely to fade when paired with the dark-blue hue. Luckily, you'll find plenty of colors, including mustard yellow, bright pink, cherry red, and even metallic gold, that go beautifully with navy blue.
In fact, any dark, almost navy blue will go great with your oak cabinets. This blue, and all dark blues, are cool colors that will accent the cabinets.
Taupe, tan and beige are all classic colors to pair with cedar. This taupe, beige and brown feel right at home under an Aged Cedar roof. Keeping the colors toned down creates a cohesive look with an aged roof.
You can use any type of acrylic you like for painting on wood. Use a wide, flat paintbrush to apply the paint to the wood. Allow the paint to dry before applying a second coat, and then paint the back if you wish. Most acrylic paints will take roughly 20 minutes to dry.
Caroline Atkins in "Country Living Shortcuts to Decorating Country Style" suggests combining dark wood furniture, such as mahogany, with lighter, golden woods such as pine or oak. The contrasting wood colors balance each other out. Use pale ash or beech with mahogany to accent the mahogany furniture.
Check the undertones.Cool toned woods will look a little bit grey, like Ash, Maple, Poplar, or Pine. Neutrally toned woods like Walnut are the most versatile. Walnut has soft purple undertones that work with warm and cool toned wood alike.
For furniture, it's best to use a satin or semigloss finish in either a latex or an oil-based paint. Never leave primer unpainted. If you choose a latex paint, a latex primer is an excellent choice for most uses. It goes on easily and blocks most stains, and it doesn't have the odor of an oil-based primer.
Consider painting over those pale yellow walls with a warm color such as melon or a reddish-orange.
