Hedgehog nails grow fast and need to betrimmed every 2-4 weeks (every hedgehog is different)otherwise you risk serious vet bills. Hedgehog nailscurl under and if not trimmed, the nail will curl into theirskin and cause serious problems with their feet.
In short, NO, you SHOULD NOT trim hedgehogquills!
Hedgehogs also need to be bathed, but not toooften because their skin will become dry. They make hedgehogsoap, but I use Dawn dish soap because it is delicate(it is used it to clean off animals after an oilspill).
Once a month bathing is adequate for theaverage hedgehog. Some hedgehogs need bathsfrequently and others seldom need one. Bathinggenerally helps to relieve dry skin; however, bathing toofrequently may contribute to dry skin.
Other color variations can be brown, black, cream, gray, and even albino. The African pygmy hedgehog is themost common type sold as pets. It can grow to be around sixto nine inches long.
To pick up your hedgehog with your barehands, cup your palms on either side of him. It's easier to usetwo hands at first, though you can advance to justusing one. Then, wriggle your fingers or the sides of yourhands under him and lift.
Sometimes hedgehogs will lick salt from sweatyhands and become tempted to bite, because they like the saltytaste. When a hedgehog bites due to taste and smell it isexhibiting normal, but unacceptable behavior. This is the mostcommon reason for biting and the easiest toavoid.
Hedgehogs are easily recognized by theirspines, which are hollow hairs made stiff with keratin.Their spines are not poisonous or barbed andunlike the quills of a porcupine, do noteasily detach from their bodies.
Do Hedgehogs Like to Be Held? Yes,hedgehogs enjoy being held in the palm of the hand.It makes them feel secure and also helps them build a connectionwith their owner. In fact, holding the pet is an excellent way ofstrengthening your bond with your pet hedgehog.
Hedgehog bellies are covered with soft fur buttheir sides and backs are covered with stiff quills. These quillsare sharp (though, unlike a porcupine's quills, they are notbarbed) and are controlled by a series of muscles, so when ahedgehog feels threatened the quills are raised to stand onend.
Typical costs: Hedgehogs range inprice from about $70 to $250, depending on thehedgehog's age, color, and temperament. Some breeders offerhedgehog starter kits for around $75 that include a cage, wheel, a hiding place, water bottle, feed bowl and food, and someshavings. Hedgehogs live between four and sixyears.
Captive or Pet Hedgehogs. Hedgehogs arewild animals and do not take well to being kept incaptivity. To keep a healthy hedgehog confined in asmall space or garden is cruel and many just give up and die, theyneed the stimulation of the hunt and feel the need to explore inorder to prosper.
A single, common source of hedgehogs was notidentified. Regardless of where hedgehogs are purchased, they can carry Salmonella germs that can make peoplesick. People who own or come in contact with hedgehogs cantake steps to stay healthy around their pet.
If the hedgehog is curled up it's just acase of picking it up and placing it gently into yourbox. If the hedgehog is uncurled, the easiest way topick them up is to scoop them up – putyour hand in between their front legs and back legs and liftthem up and place them in your box.
Hedgehogs also generally don't die curledup….
The answer is that unless you are prepared to hedgehogproof the entire garden, there is no point in moving theresident hedgehogs as others from the local populationwill very likely move into the vacatedarea.
Feeding hedgehogs
Leave out foods like tinned dog or cat food (notfish-based) and crushed dog or cat biscuits. Specialisthedgehog food is also recommended and can be bought fromwildlife food suppliers. Never feed hedgehogs milk as it cancause diarrhoea; instead provide plain, fresh water in a shallowbowl.Your hedgehog's ears should be clean with nodrainage, crustiness, or flaking on the outer part of the ear.Check the skin to make sure there are no abrasions, lumps, bumps, excessive dryness, bare patches, or signs of mites. Thehedgehog's body should be filled out through the back andsides.
Pretty much every time that we pick up Honey thehedgehog, she rolls into a ball. When they arefrightened, or annoyed, hedgehogs will roll into aball so that an predator will feel the full brunt of itssharp spines and will then leave the hedgehogalone.
During the day, and during winter hibernation, thehedgehog will sleep in a specially built nest in thickundergrowth, under a shed, in piles of leaves or unlit bonfires. Itwill never sleep or hibernate outside a nest.
It's incredible to note that hedgehogs stop beingwarm blooded creatures, as this state often uses up too muchenergy. A comfortable surrounding temperature forhedgehogs to hibernate effectively is around 5degrees, and freezing conditions must be avoided.
The fact that it is curled up is encouragingbecause it means the animal is strong enough to do so. Ahedgehog that is in a state of collapse, or very dehydrated, cannot curl up. Have some food ready to offer thehedgehog when it has uncurled. Hold the prickly ballup and look underneath for a V shape.
Hedgehogs are generally calm, solitarycreatures.
Hedgehogs require only 30 minutes ofsocialization per day, and some are perfectly content beingleft completely on their own. Whatever yourhedgehog's personality, it is suggested that you spend asmall amount of time with your hedgehog out of his cage eachday.Hedgehogs do not take up much space and are notsmelly (as long as the cage is cleaned properly) and theyare a quiet pet. They can be the perfect option for people inapartments. Just don't expect your hedgehog to be like a dogor cat. They are pretty indifferent and can take a little time towarm up to you.
It is important to move steadily and confidently.Certainly picking up a hedgehog doesn't hurt nearly as badas getting a shot but the spines are sharp and they are gong toprick you to some degree. Hedgehogs have pooreyesight but they can detect movement verywell.
Many hedgehogs love to play with ping pong balls, lattice bird or cat balls, or small balls with bells inside. Makesure the balls are not sturdy and not easily chewed or damaged.Another version of the plastic ball is a ferret treat ball. As thehedgie pushes around the ball a treat will come out.
Hedgehogs need plenty of room to move about andplay. The minimum size recommended by most hedgehog enthusiasts is24” x 24” or four square feet. Your cage shouldhave enough room for a wheel, litter box, and sleeping bagor nest box, and eating area.
Aspen and Carefresh are popular substrates, howeveraspen is not recommended because it contains sharp pieces that canpierce a hedgehog in the eye while burrowing, andhedgehogs are burrowers by nature. If you want to use asubstrate bedding CareFresh Ultra (white) is the besttype to use.
