When do I need permission to use someone else's plans? In general terms, someone who is not the copyright owner needs permission to use the copyright material in any of the ways reserved to the copyright owner (such as reproducing or communicating the material).
You can do your own plans. They don't have to be too fancy for something like a garage, but they do need to have all the important information on them. (Address, name, dimensions, materials etc.)

How to Draw a Floor Plan
- Choose your area. To start, you'll need to know the type of floor plan you want to create.
- Know your dimensions.
- Start in pencil.
- Draw to scale.
- Mark features with the correct shorthands.
- Include the features.
- Know which direction the windows face.
- Add an elevation.
Look for efficient circulation and storage. Walk through the plan from foyer to kitchen and bedrooms. Follow the path from garage through mud room to the kitchen: coming in with groceries or other items should be as convenient as possible.
There are a few basic steps to creating a floor plan:
- Choose an area. Determine the area to be drawn.
- Take measurements. If the building exists, measure the walls, doors, and pertinent furniture so that the floor plan will be accurate.
- Draw walls.
- Add architectural features.
- Add furniture.
Measure the length of your room in feet. Transfer that measurement to your graph paper by making a like with your pencil. If your room is 14 ½ feet long, then draw a line that is 14 ½ boxes long on your graph paper. Likewise, you will measure the width of the room, and transfer those measurements onto graph paper.
