On 14 January 2020, while attending the TCA Press Tour, Brenda Blethyn confirmed that Vera was renewed for an eleventh series. Production of four new episodes began in April 2020 and are due to premiere in 2021. The producers of the show also discussed the possibility of a U.S. remake of the show.

Jimmy and Fran lived in Shetland with Cassie who still retained a good relationship with Duncan. Fran was killed during an investigation on Jimmy's home island, Fairisle.
Jimmy had met Fran, the love of his life, and her lovely young daughter, 7 year old Cassie. Then Fran got stabbed and died in book 4, just before she and Jimmy were to get married.

DI Jimmy (along with DI Jessie Cole) interrogated Donna, with the latter at first insinuating that Donna was helping Duncan before she revealed the truth: she had killed Lizzie, having done so after she threatened to tell Kevin about her affair with Duncan.
Viewers saw original character Sandy Wilson suspended after his negligent policing led to a suspect taking their own life in a prison cell. One said the series was the “best so far, so please please please let there be a series six”, and another said they were “having withdrawal symptoms already”.
At the end of the season, Leanne is arrested and escorted off the island to prison in handcuffs after stabbing Perez's love interest, whom Leanne blamed for the death of her mother. At the end of the season, Cassie moves away to Brazil, leaving Perez alone on Shetland. Now for the shocking truth: Leanne is Cassie.
