Apple has almost fixed a power-management issue that's been causing iPhones to shut down unexpectedly, and requires devices to be plugged in to restart. Apple has also tweaked iOS so that if an iPhone 6s or 6s Plus does unexpectedly shut down, it won't need to be plugged into a socket to restart.
The most common cause of phone turning off automatically is that the battery doesn't fit properly. With wear and tear, battery size or its space may change a bit over time. Make sure the battery side hit on your palm to put pressure on the battery. If the phone turns off, then it's time to fix the loose battery.
To do this, press both the Power and Home buttons and hold them down. (In the case of the iPhone 7, press and hold the Power button and the volume down button.) Keep holding both buttons down until you see the Apple logo appear on the screen. After the Apple logo appears, your iPhone or iPad will boot back up normally.
One of the first things you should do if you're having a problem with your iPhone is to reset it. You can do this by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds. Don't release the buttons until you see the Apple logo. You can also check the video to see how it is done.
Press your device's Power button and hold it down. You should only have to hold the Power button down for ten seconds, but you may have to hold it down for thirty seconds or longer. This will cut the power to your phone or tablet and force it to boot back up, fixing any hard freezes.

It may be that the battery is bad. One of the symptoms of a bad battery is an immediate power off (meaning it doesn't go through the full shutdown process) before reaching zero, but I will say doing so at 70% is the most extreme case I've seen.
So your iPhone battery icon on the top right of your screen might show 50%, even when it's about to die. To fix the problem, Apple suggests iPhone owners restart their phones, then go to Settings > General > Date & Time and make sure that "Set Automatically" is turned on.
That's what's going on when a phone turns off with 40% battery left. There's plenty of water in the tank, but all the build-up inside the valve restricts the flow so much that the pressure takes a nosedive. Aside from general wear, temperature also has a major impact on the internal resistance of the battery.
According to Battery University, leaving your phone plugged in when it's fully charged, like you might overnight, is bad for the battery in the long run. It keeps the battery in a high-stress, high-tension state, which wears down the chemistry within.

Google's Family Link app allows you to schedule a span of time for the phone to be off, such as bedtime. But you can also completely lock the device so kids can't even get into it.
