The partition of Ireland (Irish: crÃochdheighilt na hÉireann) was the process by which the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland divided Ireland into two self-governing polities: Northern Ireland and Southern Ireland. It was enacted on 3 May 1921 under the Government of Ireland Act 1920.
Ireland hold the record for getting furthest in the tournament without winning a match. Their first appearance was in Italy at the 1990 FIFA World Cup. 1990 was also their best performance in a major championship, where they reached the quarter-finals.
The flag itself is a vertical tricolour of green (at the hoist),
white and orange.

However, since 1973 there has been no official Northern Ireland flag. In the absence of such a flag, the Union Flag has been used and is an integral part of the Protestant, Unionist, and Loyalist tradition.

The separation of Ireland's football associations occurred in 1921. Down south, Leinster were furious and broke away to form their own association - the Football Association of Ireland. So, on its base level, the reason that there are two national teams is that there are two associations.

The IRFU (Irish Rugby football Union) and the IFA (Irish Football Association) were both established when the South was still part of the United Kingdom. The IRFU (much like Cricket Ireland) decided not to split their respective organisations post independence and continue with business as usual.

He was born on 22 May 1946 and grew up in Cregagh, east Belfast. Best was brought up in the Free Presbyterian faith. His father was a member of the Orange Order and as a boy George carried the strings of the banner in his local Cregagh lodge.

So where did the green come from? The Football Association of Ireland was set up in 1921 to represent Southern Ireland (quickly renamed the Irish Free State), and wore green to differentiate itself from its northern rival.
The current Northern Ireland team is managed by a Catholic, Michael O'Neill, who played minor Gaelic football for Antrim, my own county.
