It was not until the late 1970s and early 1980s that road bicycle companies started to manufacture mountain bicycles using high-tech lightweight materials. Joe Breeze is normally credited with introducing the first purpose-built mountain bike in 1978.
As of April 2009, MacAskill had been practising several hours per day for more than 12 years. He gave up his job as a mechanic so he could ride full-time and now lives in Glasgow.
We met up with Aaron Gwin at Fontana recently and photographed him riding his new Intense 279 downhill bike, which was completely designed around the 29/27.5 wheel setup.

Downhill mountain biking & speedWhat's the average speed dowhilling among competitive riders? The average speed is ≈ 17 mph (27 kph) with peak speeds upwards of 30 mph (48 kph) during downhill mountain bike riding.
A cyclist who pedalled at a speed of more than 174mph (280km/h) has finally seen his achievement recognised as a Guinness World Record. Neil Campbell, 45, an architect from Essex, broke the men's cycling speed record in August along a two-mile (3.2km) airstrip in Yorkshire.
On Sunday September 16, 2018, Denise Mueller-Korenek broke the bicycle land speed record of 167 mph, hitting 183.932 mph at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats.
In Tour de France downhill sections, they can go at speeds as high as 65 mph / 110 Km/h, even losing the motorbike reporters.

Aerovelo's human-powered vehicle “Eta†has broken the world record for fastest human-powered vehicle, reaching 89.59 mph/144.18 kph at the World Human Powered Speed Challenge in Battle Mountain, Nevada.
The race has been managed by Edwards since its inception, and is organized by his company, UCC. The exact route of the course may change from year to year, depending on terrain and weather conditions, taking riders between 20 minutes to over 1 hour to complete, but on average lasts 35-50 minutes.
At 82 years old, Alf isn't slowing down. In fact, he didn't even start mountain biking until he was 70.
