Bruce Lee Foundation. Bruce Lee's martial journey from Wing Chun Gung Fu to his own art of Jeet Kune Do. Bruce began his martial arts training with Wing Chun master, Yip Man (pictured), in Hong Kong, at 13. Bruce trained with Yip and Yip's top students until he left for the USA in 1959.
The largest influence on Lee's martial arts development was his study of Wing Chun. Lee began training in Wing Chun when he was 16 years old under the Wing Chun teacher Yip Man in between late 1956 and 1957, after losing to rival gang members.
According to Cadwell, Lee decided to learn martial arts because he was being bullied himself, although it has also been reported that he wanted to learn some new techniques to gain an edge in street fights. Lee himself says he took up kung fu when he started to feel “insecure”.
Growing up, Lee was a child actor who appeared in some 20 Chinese films; he also studied dancing and trained in the Wing Chun style of gung fu (also known as kung fu). In 1959, Lee returned to America, where he eventually attended the University of Washington and opened a martial-arts school in Seattle.
Because Lee never responded to this public request, also closed his school, and moved out of the area shortly after the fight, the Chinese martial arts community in San Francisco concluded that Lee lost.
Ip Man, also known as Yip Man, (Chinese: ??; 1 October 1893 – 2 December 1972) was a Chinese martial artist of Cantonese ancestry and a master of the martial art Wing Chun. He had several students who later became martial arts masters in their own right. His most famous student was Bruce Lee.
