Boardman quits ITV to focus on Manchester cycling role. Olympic gold medalist Chris Boardman has stepped down as ITV's Tour de France commentator to focus on his role as Greater Manchester's walking and cycling commissioner. Earlier this month maps for Greater Manchester's £1.5n "Beelines" routes were unveiled.
He is a former amateur cyclist and received a professional contract in 1967; instead of turning professional, he saw a future in sports journalism after writing articles in cycling magazines about races in which he participated.
Paul Sherwen, who raced in the Tour de France and then became a longtime voice of commentary on that and other major cycling events for the English-speaking world, died on Dec. 2 at his home in Kampala, Uganda. He was 62. The cause was heart failure, his wife, Katherine Love Sherwen, said.
Carlton Kirby is the principal cycling commentator for Eurosport and has covered the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana among many other cycling races.
Paul Sherwen, who has died of a heart attack aged 62, was a pioneering member of the group of English-speaking cyclists nicknamed the Foreign Legion, a doughty five-times Tour de France finisher and, together with Phil Liggett, half of the Channel 4 commentary pairing that brought the race into British sitting rooms
For a number of years, Chris Boardman has spent every July away from the UK commentating on ITV's coverage of the Tour de France. However, he has now given up this prominent punditry role to concentrate on the creation of a network of walking and cycling routes in Greater Manchester.
In general, most riders will have completed their last long ride the weekend before the Tour, and then they start to dial it back by tapering. “They go from riding five to six hours a day to riding about an hour or so or just taking the whole day off,” says Lim.
The race alternates between clockwise and counterclockwise circuits of France. There are usually between 20 and 22 teams, with eight riders in each. All of the stages are timed to the finish; the riders' times are compounded with their previous stage times.
Compare these numbers to the calories burned by a professional cyclist riding in the Tour de France. Riders will typically burn about 4,000 kcal on an "easy" stage. Average stages require between 4,000 and 6,000 kcal. Grueling mountain stages demand calorie burns of 7,000 kcal or more.
Five U.S. Riders Compete in Tour de France. The Tour de France is pretty fresh territory for four of the five U.S. riders in the midst of the 21-stage race. Ian Boswell (Bend, Ore.) and Chad Haga (McKinney, Texas) are both making their Tour debut, while Lawson Craddock (Houston) and Tayor Phinney (Boulder, Colo.)

Tour de France is split into 21 stages: Nine flat stages, three hilly stages, seven mountain stages (including five summit finishes), two individual time trials and two rest days. Each stage has a winner, and the rider that completes the most stages in the shortest amount of time goes onto win the overall title.
A total of 176 riders from 22 teams participated in the race.
