Most of the expansion of the Mysore kingdom came at the cost of Nizam's territories. As Nizam ruler, Nizam Ali Khan has entered into a subsidary alliance with the British, accordingly the Britishers would provide army to the Nizams to guard his territory with a condition that salary would be paid by the Nizam.
He was styled as His Exalted Highness the Nizam of Hyderabad. He was one of the wealthiest people of all time. In 1937, he was featured on the cover of Time magazine, labelled as the richest person at the time, the 5th richest man in history and the richest Indian ever.
The last Nizam of Hyderabad Mir Osman Ali Khan ruled the state from 1911 until 1948. He was given the title "Faithful Ally of the British Empire". Hyderabad was considered backward, but peaceful, during this time. Hyderabad was the only state in British India which had its own currency, the Hyderabadi rupee.
The Nizams retained internal power over Hyderabad State until 17 September 1948, when Hyderabad was integrated into the new Indian Union. The seventh and last Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan, fell from power when India annexed Hyderabad in 1948.
On 11 June 1947, the Nizam issued a declaration to the effect that he had decided not to participate in the Constituent Assembly of either Pakistan or India. However, the Nizams were Muslim ruling over a predominantly Hindu population. India insisted that the great majority of residents wanted to join India.
The Nizam was forced to accept accession to the new Republic of India. His abdication on 17 September 1948 marked the end of the dynasty's ambitions. Mir Osman Ali Khan, the last Nizam, died on Friday 24 February 1967.
Nizams were subordinate to mughal.. I.e they worked for mughal but later carved an independent state of Hyderabad in 1724 which they ruled strong handedly after the disintegration and weakening of mughal power in 18th century and had hereditary successors known as Nizams of hyderabad.
