Hippolyta was the queen of the tribe of the Amazons in Greek mythology. She played a significant role in the Twelve Labours of Heracles. She was the daughter of the god of war, Ares, who had given her a magical girdle as a gift.
Wonder Woman is named after the Roman goddess Diana (whose Greek equivalent is Artemis). Diana was known as a wild and free-spirited goddess who hung out in the mountains, woods, and meadows. A powerful hunter and skilled archer, she fought with the same mix of power and finesse as Wonder Woman.

During this conflict, known as the Attic War, Antiope was accidentally shot dead by an Amazon named Molpadia, who, in turn, was killed by Theseus. According to some sources, the cause for the Amazons' attack on Athens was the fact that Theseus had abandoned Antiope and planned to marry Phaedra.
