It is usually not a good idea to build a deck near or on top of a septic tank. Most zoning ordinances will require that you maintain at least a 5' setback from an underground septic system. Installing frost footings and applying deck loads over a septic tank could result in damaging the tank or waste lines.

Most septic tanks are buried 1 to 3 feet underground and are approximately 10 to 20 feet from the home. Use a metal detector. If you have a concrete tank, a metal detector can locate the reinforcement bars in the concrete.
In most cases there are two lids to access your septic tank. A septic tank installed before 1975 will have a single 24-inch concrete lid in the center of the rectangle. A two-compartment tank installed after 1975 will have two lids of either fiberglass or polyethylene, centered at opposite ends of the rectangle.

Even after one week of septic pumping service, your septic tank should return to a “proper working level” about 1 foot from the top of the tank. Your septic tank will hold liquid in order for the separation of solids and liquid to happen. Only the liquid (or grey water) should flow out to the leach field pipes.
Like wells, septic systems have problems if they are not sealed from outside surface water. A septic tank stores the solids from drains and needs to be pumped out about every two years, so it's not a good idea to cover the area -- you need to always be sure where to find the tank.
Standard septic tank replacement lids can range in cost from $30 to $70. Installation charges will apply if you hire a contractor. If the septic tank lid is made from concrete, the cost of replacement will be more as special equipment will be required to remove the old lid and install the new one.
These can be purchased online or at a home improvement store near you. Many septic tanks have risers so the lid is visible above ground. Others are unseen as they are under the ground surface.

For that reason, abandoning the well is done according to local codes and followed up with a city inspection to make sure the closed tank is safe. Your contractor will decide on the best way to abandon your old septic tank. Tanks can be completely removed or they can be destroyed and buried in place.
There is not a great deal of gas generated in a septic tank, but the gas must be released so pressure does not build up in the tank. If the septic tank has inlet and outlet baffles, they must be vented. If the inlet and outlet are tees, they must have upward extensions and be vented.

On average, it costs $399 to clean or pump a septic tank. Most homeowners spend between $286 and $530. It's possible for extremely large tanks to run $1,000 or more. But, most homes with 1,500 to 3,000 square feet pay between $250 to $600.
Scum layer should look like rich, living soil and only have mild odors. The liquid level should be even with the base of the outlet pipe. If the tank looks normal, continue with inspection.
You can also use these when preparing for the inspection.
- Pump septic every 2-3 years as mentioned above.
- Inspect around the pump every year for leaks or other issues.
- Keep records of maintenance and pumping.
- Use low flush toilets, low flow showerheads.
- Clean lint regularly from the washing machine.
Excessive use of powdered detergent in washing machines or dishwasher & white waxy deposits. A good guess is that your sewage ejector tank or septic tank that uses a septic pump was clogged by someone who used too much powdered detergents in a clothes washer or dishwasher.
The answer is yes, it can happen and it is easier than you might think. Over the years, I've written a few columns about septic system safety concerns, and one of the concerns has been the buildup of toxic or explosive gases.

- Plant tall native grasses with fibrous roots around the opening to conceal the tank lid from view.
- Place a light statue, bird bath or potted plant over the septic lid.
