Palakkad Gap or Palghat Gap is a low mountain pass in the Western Ghats between Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu and Palakkad in Kerala. It has an average elevation of 140 metres (460 ft) with a width of 24–30 kilometres (15–19 mi).
It is due to the Palakkad Gap. The gap is the lowest pass through the Western Ghats. At the same time, due to hot winds coming from Tamilnadu the district of Palakkad is warmer than the rest of Kerala during summer.
Palakkad is the largest city of Kerala state. It is also known as Granary of Kerala and Rice bowl of Kerala. It is famous for it's historic Palakkad Fort and Jain Temple, annual Ratholsavam, and beautiful and lushy, Malampuzha Garden and Dam.

States Reorganization Commission
Based on this report, Devikulam - Peermedu and Neyyattinkara Taluks were merged with Kerala state. On 1 November 1956 - four Taluks Thovalai, Agastheeswaram, Kalkulam, Vilavancode were recognised to form the New Kanyakumari District and merged with Tamil Nadu State.The British made Palakkad a part of the Malabar District of Madras Presidency which post independence became a part of the Madras state. In 1956, when Kerala came into existence, Palakkad became a part of it. Palakkad is supposed to have derived its name from the “Pala tree” (Alsteria Scholaris) and “kadu” (forest).
He said that since August 8 -- when the rains began pounding the southern state -- as 3,14,391 persons have been lodged in 2,094 relief camps across Kerala. "The worst affected districts include Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Thrissur," Vijayan said after a review meeting with state officials.

A. There are a lot of beaches in and nearby Palakkad, namely the Karammal Beach, Kappad Beach, Baypore Beach, Cherai Beach, Kollam Beach, Nattika Beach and many more.
The dam and the garden is illuminated at nights on Weekends and Public Holidays. There is a swimming pool in the Garden, which is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The pool will be closed for Lunch Break from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, and only ladies will be permitted from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

Etymology. The commonly held belief is that the name Palakkad is a fusion of two Malayalam words, Pala, which was the name given to barren land during the Sangam period, and Kadu, which means forest.

Large parts of the district remain flooded on Friday as heavy rain continues. Nearly 3,000 people belonging to 850 families were shifted to 42 relief camps functioning in Palakkad, Alathur, Chittur, Mannarkkad, Pattambi and Ottappalam taluks. Several housing colonies in Palakkad town have been submerged.
