Each team plays each opponent of the same division 4 times (twice at home, twice away) for a total of 16 games. A team plays against each team from the other two divisions in its conference either three or four times.
There are currently 30 teams in the NBA. The league is divided up into two conferences, the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. The Eastern conference has three divisions called Atlantic, Central, and Southeast.
Each round features a best-of-seven series with a 2-2-1-1-1 format (two games at the top seed's home court, two games at the lower seed's home, then back and forth one game at a time). The winners of each Conference meet in the best-of-seven NBA Finals.

The reason the owners wanted an increase in the number of games is money; more games equals more money that can be made. The NBA has went through a similar rise in the number of games played during a season, from 60 games to 68, then to 70, then to 72 and, beginning with the 1960–1961 season, 80 games.

NBA players typically get paid bi-weekly during the season, but they have the right to negotiate a different payment schedule on an individual basis. 80% is the maximum amount a player's salary can be paid out in a lump sum, according to the LA Times.
Bench players matter, and it's time we give them their due. The NBA awards one lone Sixth Man of the Year award to its most outstanding bench player, but depth matters so much more than that. Each team fields 13 active players each night, and 62% of them start on the bench.
