Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up trucks have been in production since 1994. Problems that have been reported include transmission failure, fluctuating rpm, reverse failure, other reversing problems, breaking planetary gears and torque converter failures.
Personally I believe the 42re is a reliable transmission. It doesn't really seem to have any common issues, maybe bad solenoids. Mine has 231,000, seems fine. Use the correct fluid, keep them cool, use O/D off when towing anything.

reliability wise the 46re is about the best of the jeep automatic transmissions for that year. There also in the dodge ram 1500, 2500, 3500. So It is a truck transmission. However the earlier 46rh was much better.

There not interchangeable. Other then that,it's the same. Ask for the build sheet for the 5.2 and the 5.9 then you'll know the difference.

Control of the 46REThey use a sun gear and two planetary gear sets. No you wont get a rebuilt 46re for anywhere near 100 bucks. it will likely cost over 2000 bucks anywhere. Sometimes over 3000.
The difference is how much torque they can handle. The 44 is a bit stronger than the 42. They have the same gear ratios. The 46 RE has a larger housing and a different 1st and 2nd gear.
Look for the transmission part/identification number and date code. According to the 42RE service manual on Scribd.com, the codes are located on the driver's side of the transmission, stamped just above the oil pan gasket surface. The first group is the assembly part number, followed by the manufacturing date.
If you can find a jeep 46re it's a bolt in swap. They're the same length and everything. ..and if you can't, a built 44RE can take way more power & torque than a stock 46RE. 44RE also has better gear ratios than a 46RE, and has lighter internals.
