Track spikes, or just spikes, are racing shoes used by athletes when racing on the track. Some spikes are designed for longer-term training on tracks, but generally the shoes are used for racing. The term "spikes" can also refer to track shoes featuring such protrusions, though these are technically called pins.
Remember that track spikes are only meant to be worn on the track. The shorter the event, the more spikes you'll need. Sprinters will need more spikes (6-10) for greater traction, and long distance runners only need a few (4-6) to shave weight off of the shoe.
Beginning sprinters are better off using pyramid spikes until very good form is achieved because it's possible to scratch the opposite leg with with spikes if you overpronate on a stride. Needle spikes are used mostly for running on all-weather tracks that have a springy surface.
Breaking Spikes InIt takes time to break in your new track spikes. Don't wear them straight out of the box in your next race. Instead, wear them several times a week during early-season practices to get used to their feel and function.
NOTE: One should NEVER race with spikes on the road. Spikes, like other racing shoes, only last 200-300mls so be diligent in keeping-track with how many miles you have logged on a pair in your training journal.
Spikes can take a little getting used to. They're fun to run in. Unless your track is some sort of bizarre, slippery surface, your safety should be fine in any kind of running shoes.
For the 800 you can run in shoes as minimal as sprint spikes if you like. My suggestion to you is to get some distance spikes if you are the 800/1600 type or some sprint spikes if you are the 400/800 type. Middle distance spikes could also be a nice compromise.

How Your Spikes Should Fit. Sprint, jump, and throw spikes should fit like a glove. They will be snug and provide a narrow fit. Your toes should reach the end of the shoes, but not be jammed into them.
Most (non-athletic) healthy active kids and young adults will be able to run 100m around that pace or slightly faster without any training. With a little bit of regular training they might be able to drop 2–3sec to maybe 15 sec. Lots of hobby runners of a very wide age range could put up a 15sec/100m, or even 30s/200m.
If you find a still photo of champion sprinter Usain Bolt, you'll notice he's not wearing socks. It isn't a trend he started: sock-wearing just isn't widespread among front-line sprinters. When they do slip into a pair, it's usually a thin version for comfort.
On a high quality rubber-over-concrete track (short spikes; 3–5 mm), you can shave upwards of a full second off your time. You will experience a massive difference in traction, foot speed (due to the LIGHT shoes), resulting running form (full upright leg extension), and velocity.
Spikes make you between 1-2 sec faster per lap.
Cleats are faster cause they produce lot of friction at shoe-surface level allowing athlete to propel with great force. Thus Athlete muscle use + Shoe-surface friction = Increased speed.
Basically, almost everyone benefits from spikes - some more than others, but you can expect around a 3-5% improvement in speed. So around 0.5 seconds.

Spikes are provided in the shoe of an athlete because the spikes help them to make grip with the surface i.e., increases the friction between the shoe and the surface.
A good rule of thumb is to replace them every two seasons. While this may seem like it could become expensive, it's much less costly than getting injured from racing in a pair of track spikes that are worn out.
Spikes vs no spikes is probably a 1.5 second difference. A 1600 is not nearly at that pace, so probably about . 75s difference per 100, which means 3 seconds a lap. The race is 4 laps so approx.
If a race is off the track, you shouldn't wear any kind of spikes. If you're talking about an 800, 1600, 5k, 10k, on a track, you could wear track spikes, but chances are you don't need to. Many runners do wear running spikes to get that little bit more push from the ground.
If your runner is also running longer distance events, it's better to buy a long-distance spike. If they are running more sprints, and the 400-800 middle distance event, then they could buy a sprint spike. Sprint spike shoes have forefoot plates and are not the best for MD and definitely not for LD events.
VARIOUS SPIKE OPTIONS1/4" length should do the job for a track meet or for a dry cross country race. Slimmer than pyramid spikes and usually available in 3/16" length. These sink deeper into the track and may serve a lighter runner better than a heavier runner.
Unless the track is turf grass/or loose dirt, then no. You would not wear soccer cleats and most tracks would forbid you from doing so. Notice the drastic difference. In fact, any compressed clay or synthetic track would/should forbid you from wearing soccer cleats.

You can definitely wear training shoes causally. A lot of people wear these shoes on a daily basis. They cost more than some other running shoes but they're one of the most comfortable shoes made. Wearing them casually on an everyday basis would be fine.
Similar to road racing flats a runner can expect around 100 miles out of a pair of spikes. If only used for racing many high school runners can get through two cross country and track seasons assuming they do not outgrow the shoes first.
Can you wear track spikes on concrete? It's not recommended to wear track spikes (with the implements in) on concrete. You'll slide around and won't gain any advantage. A better option is to wear cross country spikes with blanks in the spike holes.
Track spikes are shorter than cross-country spikes and have more regulations regarding what can be used at each track. Most tracks state that spikes can be only 1/4 or 3/16 inch, or smaller. Cross-country spikes are made to gain traction on high grass and through the mud, so spikes generally are longer.
