Who invented zipper?
Gideon Sundback
Whitcomb L. Judson
The zipper type is determined by the zipper chain (teeth or coil). Plastic molded zippers are the most common type used in heavy outerwear. For YKK brand zippers Vislon is used to indicate plastic zippers so you will often see 5VS, 8VS, or 10V. Other zipper brands may have only a number to indicate size.
Less worries for zippers to open without knowing. Easily lock the zipper by pulling the two sliders together. Zipper will unlock by pulling down the slider into the plastic bottom parts.
Zipper size refers to the size of the teeth of the zipper. Size can also be referred to as weight. As you can see from the size chart below, the larger the number the larger the width of the teeth. *Note: some competitors refer to #5 as #6 and #10 as #9, but #5 and #10 are the correct YKK sizes.
Alternatives to Buttons & Buttonholes
- Velcro. Sewing Velcro is often my first preference when I am looking for alternatives to buttons.
- Kam Snaps. I only started using these recently but I LOVE them!
- Sew on Press Studs (Snaps) These have been around forever!
- Snap tape.
- Hook and Eyes.
A zipper track is made up of dozens of teeth, each of which combines a hook and a hollow. The idea is to latch every hook on each of the two tracks into a hollow on the opposite track. As the slide moves up the zipper, the two teeth strips must enter at a specific angle.

- 4 False placket opening.
- 5 Bias Bound opening.
- 6 Fly Opening.
- 7 Seam opening.

A fastener is the essential part of a fastening system used to hold together at least two pieces of material. It is typically a single item (button) that often works in concert with another device (buttonhole). Apparel fasteners may be permanent or temporary.
To find the size of your zipper, measure the width of your zipper teeth when they are closed in millimeters (if possible). The measurement might not neatly line up with a zipper size, as the actual size of the zipper tape can vary, but it should roughly correlate.
A fastener (US English) or fastening (UK English) is a hardware device that mechanically joins or affixes two or more objects together. In general, fasteners are used to create non-permanent joints; that is, joints that can be removed or dismantled without damaging the joining components.
From its humble beginnings as an "Automatic Continuous Clothing Closure" invented in 1851 by Elias Howe to the "Clasp Locker" patent in 1893 and marketed by Mr. Whitcomb Judson, the zipper as we know it today, had little commerical success.
A full zipper replacement will start “around” $55 – $65, plus the cost of the zipper. Leather items will cost at least half again more. A zipper “repair” can cost $15 – $30, depending on the need.
