Santee Coastal Reserve WMA, between Charleston and Georgetown at the lower reaches of the Santee River, is viewed as the best WMA for a duck hunt. It is a great place for waterfowl, but its success continues to erode. Parcels of some other WMAs now support gunning as good as Santee Coastal Reserve WMA.
Time of Year: Rabbit season typically runs from early November to late February. While early season may provide plentiful rabbits, many hunters choose to wait it out until the first good snow cover making it easier to follow their tracks. Time of Day: Rabbits are the most active at dawn and dusk.

Resident Canada geese can be hunted throughout much of the state during a special season in September prior to the arrival of the migratory populations and during the general Canada goose season in late fall and winter. unfortunately there are also a ton of places with ducks that you CAN'T legally hunt (B) It is unlawful to hunt migratory waterfowl on that portion of Lake Murray lying within Newberry and Saluda Counties within two hundred yards of a dwelling or marina without written permission of the owner and occupant.
Airboats are prohibited on public waters of this state from the freshwater-saltwater dividing line seaward, and on that portion of Lake Marion and Santee Swamp west of the I-95 bridge upstream to the confluence of the Congaree and Wateree rivers during the season for hunting waterfowl.
Small game hunting is allowed in all areas listed above, but only outside the deer and turkey seasons. Hunting for small game is restricted to shotgun only with number 4 shot or smaller. Waterfowl hunting is prohibited. Hunting for deer and turkey is restricted to archery only – all firearms are prohibited.
Waterfowl hunters, please remember that it is unlawful to hunt waterfowl on the waters of Lake Wateree between the Wateree Dam and Dutchman's Creek in Kershaw County. Hunting in the Fairfield and Lancaster counties portion is lawful, but hunters must maintain a distance of 200-yards from a residence.
Most boat-based duck hunts unfold south of Charleston in the ACE Basin, north of Charleston in the Santee Delta, or inland on the Santee-Cooper lakes and upper Cooper River.
