To paraphrase means to restate someone else'sideas in your own language at roughly the same level of detail. Tosummarize means to reduce the most essential points ofsomeone else's work into a shorter form.
Conclude an essay with one or more of thefollowing:
- Include a brief summary of the paper's main points.
- Ask a provocative question.
- Use a quotation.
- Evoke a vivid image.
- Call for some sort of action.
- End with a warning.
- Universalize (compare to other situations).
- Suggest results or consequences.
One Effective Strategy for Summarizing a ShortStory
- Write a few sentences – in your own words – statingthe main message or gist of the story.
