The shot, a metal ball (7.26kg/16lb for men, 4kg/8.8lb for women), is put – not thrown – with one hand. The aim is to put it as far as possible from a seven-foot diameter (2.135m) circle that has a curved 10-centimetre high toe-board at the front.

Shot Put is regarded as a strength event. The Shot Putter is required to push a steel ball as far as possible without throwing it. Depending on the age and gender of the athlete the weight of the implement will vary between 3km to 7.26kg.
The shot put has been an Olympic event for men since the inaugural games in 1896, and the women's event has featured in all Olympic Games since 1948. Although the sport is seen by many as an iconic Olympic event, there is no record of it ever featuring in the Ancient Games.
There are different standards for men and women in the sport, where men's javelin must weight a minimum of 800g and be 2.6m-2.7m long, women's javelin can weigh a minimum of 600g and be 2.2m-2.3m long.
It shall be 4 feet (1.22 meters) in length along the inside surface, 4 inches (10 centimeters) in height and 4½ inches (11.4 centimeters) in width. The inside edge of the line or band is the limit of the putting circle.

In May 1990, at a meet in Los Angeles, Barnes threw the shot 23.12 metres (75-10¼), which remained the world record for 31 years. Shortly after that throw, however, Barnes tested positive for anabolic steroids and served a 27-month drug ban, which prevented him from competing at the 1992 Olympics.
