You don't need to log in to use the basic features of MapQuest, but you will need to log in to use My Maps features. To create a free MapQuest account: Visit and click Sign up, located in the upper left-hand corner of the page.
But it decided not to, with good reason: Even now, some 40 million people — almost all of them in North America — use MapQuest at least once a month.
MapQuest works much like Google Maps does when it comes to searching for locations and finding directions. Just type in a location and click Get Directions to see the route. Route directions are very accurate and include current traffic levels, distance, and even estimated fuel costs to make the drive.

The Geocoding API is a service that provides geocoding and reverse geocoding of addresses. Geocoding is the process of converting addresses (like a street address) into geographic coordinates (like latitude and longitude), which you can use to place markers on a map, or position the map.
The Distance Matrix API is a service that provides travel distance and time for a matrix of origins and destinations. The API returns information based on the recommended route between start and end points, as calculated by the Google Maps API, and consists of rows containing duration and distance values for each pair.
The Mapbox web services APIs allow you to programmatically access Mapbox tools and services. You can use these APIs to retrieve information about your account, upload and change resources, use core Mapbox tools, and more. Mapbox APIs are divided into four distinct services: Maps, Navigation, Search, and Accounts.
Creating API keys
- Go to the Google Maps Platform > Credentials page. Go to the Credentials page.
- On the Credentials page, click Create credentials > API key. The API key created dialog displays your newly created API key.
- Click Close. The new API key is listed on the Credentials page under API keys.
How to find your geocode (so you can do fancy location searches on Twitter)
- Step One: Pick an address you want to geocode. Most geocode tools are picky and really do want a specific street address. For our example we're going to pick Thoughtfaucet HQ:

A geocode is a code that represents a geographic entity (location or object). It is a unique identifier of the entity, to distinguish it from others in a finite set of geographic entities. In general the geocode is a human-readable and short identifier.
You can also find the coordinates of a place you've already found on Google Maps.
Get the coordinates of a place
- On your computer, open Google Maps.
- Right-click the place or area on the map.
- Select the latitude and longitude, this will automatically copy the coordinates.

- At the top of the page, select ENABLE API to display the Library tab. Alternatively, from the left side menu, select Library.
- Search for Directions API, then select it from the results list.
- Select ENABLE. When the process finishes, Directions API appears in the list of APIs on the Dashboard.
There are four major directions, North, South, East and West. ​They are called cardinal points. Other four intermediate directions are north-east (NE), southeast(SE), south-west (SW) and north-west (NW). We can locate any place more accurately with the help of these intermediate directions.
Getting started
