The movie took some liberties with Gardner's true life story. Certain details and events that actually took place over the span of several years were compressed into a relatively short time and although eight-year-old Jaden portrayed Chris as a five-year-old, Gardner's son was just a toddler at the time.
But in The Pursuit of Happyness, which is set in San Francisco in 1981, at the dawn of the age of go-go capitalism, Smith doesn't just wear a few flecks of gray in his hair.
Marriage and troubles. After three years of marriage to Sherry, he left her to move in with Jackie and to prepare for fatherhood. Nine years elapsed before he and Sherry were legally divorced in 1986. Their son Christopher Jarrett Gardner Jr.
It was back in the early 1980s that Mr Gardner, then aged 27, and his toddler son were homeless for a year in San Francisco. Enrolled on a low-paid trainee scheme at a stock brokerage, he didn't have enough money to raise the deposit to rent an apartment.
Parents need to know that Will Smith will draw kids to this movie. But it's not an action flick or slapstick comedy -- it's an inspirational and often emotionally wrenching story. It includes some very sad scenes between family members, as well as a couple of emotionally scary ones.

Final Note: I asked Chris Gardner if he could really whip a Rubik's cube into shape in the space of a cab ride as was shown in the movie. He says he owns three Rubik's cubes and that he can solve it by picturing the moves before he makes them— but allowed that it's not always simple.
Towards the end of The Pursuit of Happyness movie, you see that Chris Gardner sold all his medical devices, but the IRS took all his money for unpaid taxes. Where did Chris Gardner live?
Marriage and troubles. On June 18, 1977, Chris Gardner married Sherry Dyson, a Virginia native and an educational expert in mathematics. After three years of marriage to Sherry, he left her to move in with Jackie and to prepare for fatherhood. Nine years elapsed before he and Sherry were legally divorced in 1986.
After Gardner had found a home, he resumed contact with Jackie and had a second child with her in 1985 – a daughter named Jacintha. Gardner turned down Jackie's offer for the two to get back together in a relationship, but arranged for Chris Jr.
The actor was 10 years old when he signed on to star in the hit movie. While some 10-year-olds are just happy to get a weekly allowance, Jaden Smith pulled in a whopping seven-figure payday for his hit film The Karate Kid, according to TMZ.
