The name "Crystal City" came from the first building, which was called Crystal House and had an elaborate crystal chandelier in the lobby. Every subsequent building took on the Crystal name (e.g., Crystal Gateway, Crystal Towers) and eventually the whole neighborhood.
Housing all three Axis nationalities, Crystal City (Family) Internment Camp was intended to be populated by people of Japanese ancestry and their immediate families. However, on December 12, 1942, the camp's first internees to arrive were a mix of German Americans and German Enemy Aliens.

Severita Lara (Born February 6, 1952) is a Mexican-American political activist from Crystal City, Texas. She is known as a leader of the 1969 Crystal City High School student walkout. She ran for county judge in 1986 and later was elected into the city council of Crystal City.
Crystal City Texas is also considered the Spinach Capital of the World.
Crystal City was incorporated in 1910, when it had an estimated 530 inhabitants, and by 1914 the community had a bank, three general stores, and the weekly Chronicle. In 1928 the county voted to make Crystal City the county seat, and that same year the community added a city manager to its mayor-council government.
