Good Friday is a day of sadness and mourning to commemorate the death of Jesus and his many sufferings.
The holy day also marks the final Friday of Lent, the 40-day Catholic observance in which Catholics abstain from eating meat on Fridays. Because Good Friday is the day that Christians observe their savior, Jesus Christ, dying on the cross, abstaining from eating meat is a recognition of his sacrifice.
(However, the precept to both fast and abstain on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday is usually not dispensed from.) Church requirements on fasting only relate to solid food, not to drink, so Church law does not restrict the amount of water or other beverages – even alcoholic drinks – which may be consumed.
In the United Kingdom, public holidays are days on which most businesses and non-essential services are closed. There are seven bank holidays common to all jurisdictions: New Year's Day, Good Friday, the early May bank holiday, the Spring bank holiday, the Summer bank holiday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

NSW, the Northern Territory and Western Australia have 10 days. South Australia gets 10 days, but has New Year's Eve and Christmas Eve as part days off. Queensland and Tasmania receive nine days, but those living in Brisbane get an extra day off for the Royal Queensland Show Day in August.
