A white panther is a white specimen of any of several species of larger cat. A white panther may then be a white cougar, a white jaguar, or a white leopard. Of these, white leopards appear to be the most common, although still very rare.

Panthers are strictly carnivores and eat only meat. About 90 percent of their diet is feral hog, white-tailed deer, raccoon, and armadillo. Occasionally they consume rabbits, rats, and birds, and occasionally even alligators.
They like living in flooded forests and they can spend time in the water swimming recreationally. They are nocturnal animals. They hunt during the night and rest during the day, very often lounging on tree branches.

Panthers hunt and eat smaller wild animals such as antelopes, deer, wild boars, rabbits, birds, and reptiles. Panthers have been known to hunt near human settlements to prey on dogs, domestic cats, goats, sheep, cows, and pigs. In some extremely rare cases, panthers attack humans.
They will also eat small animals such as porcupines, coyotes, rabbits, armadillos, capybaras, squirrels and raccoons.

How many panthers are there? Florida panthers are classified as an endangered species under the federal Endangered Species Act of 1973. An endangered species is an animal or plant that is at risk of extinction. It is illegal to harm or harass an endangered species in any way.
The black panther is the common name for a black specimen (a melanistic variant) of any of several species of cats. Zoologically speaking, the term panther is synonymous with leopard. White panthers also exist, these being albino or leucistic individuals of the same three species.
Note also, panthers do not actually come in a pink variety. The American big cat is variously called the cougar, mountain lion, puma, and sometimes American panther or Florida panther, but these names all describe the same animal.

Originally the leopard and the panther were thought to be two different species and were differentiated by tail length. Nowadays the term panther is most often used when describing black panthers (melanistic leopards and jaguars). Leopards can be mated to jaguars and produce offspring called lepjag, jagulep or jagleop.
