Treatment and prognosisIn some cases the underlying cause of the blindness will be reversible and normal vision may return. However, in other cases, even if the underlying cause is resolved, the damage to the sight may be permanent and there may be no change or improvement in the cat's vision.
Individual Cremation: The remains of a cat are cremated, and the remains are returned to the cat's owner for final disposition. The charge varies, as do the costs of permanent memorial urns for pet cremains. Some people choose to save the remains of their pets to be buried with them when they die.
Keep your cat indoors at all times. A blind cat cannot detect danger and run from it, especially if attacked or chased. If you do let your cat outside, never leave her side. A harness and leash can allow your pet to go out and enjoy the outdoors safely.
How do blind cats navigate in their environment? Blind cats rely on touch, scent, sound and memory to find their way around. To judge proximity to objects, they use their whiskers a lot more than sighted cats.
Hyperthyroidism often leads to high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart disease. The high blood pressure is due to the increased pumping pressure of the heart. In some cats, the blood pressure becomes so high that the retina detaches from the back wall of the eye, resulting in sudden blindness.
You can do the following to help your cat:
- Remain calm.
- Remember your cat is unconscious and making uncontrolled movements, including snapping his jaw.
- If possible, move your cat to a safe place, away from stairs, furniture, etc.
- When the seizure stops, your cat will be disoriented and may not recognize you.
Abnormalities with vision are the most common clinical findings with feline hypertension. These abnormalities can include dilated pupils that do not constrict with light, blood within the chamber of the eye, and blindness. Blindness develops because high blood pressure in the eye causes the retina to detach.
Feline Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
- Heart: trouble breathing, signs of stroke including dragging a limb or both hindlimbs, collapse.
- Brain: unexplained changes in behavior including increased meowing and howling.
- Kidneys: increased drinking, large urine clumps in the litter box, vomiting.
Blind cats typically are still very happy. They continue to enjoy and remain engaged in life and the world around them—including their humans. Kitties do not need to see you to love you.
Blind cats begin to rely on their other senses. They might begin to meow more, hoping for sound echoes. They also start to rely on scent and memory.
A person with total blindness won't be able to see anything. But a person with low vision may be able to see not only light, but colors and shapes too. However, they may have trouble reading street signs, recognizing faces, or matching colors to each other. If you have low vision, your vision may be unclear or hazy.
Always keep their food, water and litter trays in the same place. Some cats may find it beneficial to have a drinking water fountain so they can hear the location of their water. Communicate with your cat by calling their name and using words like 'dinner' at meal times.
“Consistency is very important.” Myrna adds that having two litter boxes might be a good idea, especially if your house is big. “You should also choose an open litter box to start so that it is easy to approach,” she adds. “Covered litter boxes will be harder to smell and may make a blind cat nervous in the beginning.”
What are the causes of cat blindness? Your cat may start to lose their sight for a variety of reasons, including old age. Inherited causes of cat blindness are less common than they are in dogs, but they tend to occur more in purebred cats.
One of the most common causes of sudden blindness in an elderly cat is due to high blood pressure (hypertension). The increased pressure pushes the light sensitive layer (retina) away from the back of the eye and this can happen literally overnight.
But the truth is that dogs and cats are highly adaptable animals and often learn quickly to live with their vision loss. They're generally as easy to care for as any other pet. Don't be deterred from adopting a blind dog or adopting a blind cat — they could make a great addition to your family.
Any damage to your retina, such as a detached retina or artery occlusion, is a possible cause of sudden blindness. A detached retina can cause total loss of vision in the affected eye, or it may only result in partial vision loss, making it seem as if a curtain is blocking part of your vision.
Cataracts happen when the normally transparent lens of the eye becomes white and cloudy. This condition is more prevalent in certain breeds, such as Persians and Himalayans. Older cats and cats with diabetes are also susceptible to cataracts. This condition can impact your cat's vision and eventually lead to blindness.
A cat's vision is similar to a human who is color blind. They can see shades of blue and green, but reds and pinks can be confusing. These may appear more green, while purple can look like another shade of blue. Cats also don't see the same richness of hues and saturation of colors that we can.
Understand the Signs of Cat Eye InfectionThe white of your cat's eye may show some redness. You may see eye discharge that's clear, yellow, or green. You may see excessive blinking, or it may look like your cat is winking at you.
Cataracts are the most common cause of clouded vision. Most cataracts develop slowly, but usually become worse over time. Cataract surgery is the most effective treatment to help restore your vision. Other less common causes of cloudy vision include Fuchs' dystrophy, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.
Blocked tear ducts, an overproduction of tears, allergies, viral conjunctivitis, and more can be behind your cat's abnormal tearing. Uveitis. An inflammation of the internal structures of the eye, trauma, cancer, immune problems or infections can cause the serious, often painful inflammation of uveitis.
Prognosis for Cat Eye InfectionsBacterial infections usually respond well to appropriate treatment, and viral infections are often self-limiting. If the infection is secondary to another problem, such as FIV, neoplasia or anatomic defect, the long term prognosis depends on the severity of the disease.
The signs of cataract-related failing vision or total loss of vision may be behavioral. A visually impaired cat may, for example, become less agile, bump into familiar furniture, or appear to have difficulty finding its food bowl or litterbox. The cat will seem reluctant to move about in unfamiliar places.
Scientists have discovered that dogs and cats carry antigens which can prompt different immune responses in humans. While the allergen which dogs carry reduces the chance of developing glaucoma – the second leading cause of blindness in the UK – owning a cat nearly doubles the risk of contracting the eye disease.
Often cats with significant kidney insufficiency will become very dehydrated. Cats with kidney disease may also develop high blood pressure. This may cause blindness, behavioural changes or neurological signs.
The four main symptoms of diabetes mellitus are increased thirst, increased urination, weight loss, and increased appetite. Because of the nature of cats, these signs may go unnoticed, especially in the early stages of disease or if a cat spends a lot of time outdoors.
Causes of Hypoglycemia in CatsGenerally, the cause of hypoglycemia in cats is related to the cat having diabetes. Disruption of a diabetic routine or insulin administration errors are often responsible for dangerously low blood sugar. In cats who do not have diabetes, liver and pancreas issues are usually to blame.
Diabetic cats with uncontrolled diabetes may develop a condition known as ketoacidosis. This occus when cells starved for glucose begin to break down fats for energy, a process that creates chemicals called ketones, which make the blood more acidic.
Appearance Changes. Cats spend a lot of time and energy grooming themselves when they're healthy, so it makes sense a cat with less energy to burn simply can't keep up. Dying cats might begin to look messy and unkempt, and might even develop a detectable odor.
Managing your glucose levels to avoid hyperglycemia is important because, over time, poor blood sugar control can lead to more problems with sight and potentially increase the risk of irreversible blindness.
Dilated (large) pupils are another source of understanding the meaning of cats' mysterious eyes, and often indicate an excited cat. It can also be a display of surprise or fear, depending on the situation. It is not unusual for a cat's pupils to fully dilate when they are really excited.
Pet urineLow concentrations of ammonia from urine can cause rapid eye irritation. Prolonged exposure can lead to permanent eye damage, and blindness.
Although cat conjunctivitis varies in terms of severity from mild cases to serious instances of cat eye infection, blindness is generally a very rare consequence for this type of condition. However, don't delay contacting your vet if you notice any of the symptoms of cat conjunctivitis.
