Back to the simulation of real life that is college. Back to moving forward. Four weeks — some schools now break for as long as six weeks during the Thanksgiving/Christmas season — is wretched excess.
The winter break lasts for two weeks (sometimes a day or two longer), beginning on Saturday and encompassing Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The spring break is one to two weeks long depending on the city or province. Good Friday and Easter may or may not fall within spring break.
One popular idea is that school children have a long summer holiday (six weeks for most pupils in the UK) so that they could help work in the fields over the summer. Perhaps it was just to be nice to school students by giving them time off at the sunniest part of the year.
Germany only has ten weeks a year. Sweden is also not bad: They have ten weeks summer holidays and almost three weeks Christmas holidays plus a week in autumn and spring.
