Most children start our school at 3, full-time. Only the poor people (since the government changed the rules and cut the funding to the Foundation Stage) use the part-time places. It very much depends where you live. Here they go into the Reception Class in primary school the term after they turn 4.
Most preschools start accepting kids around the age of 2.5 to 3 years old, but since every child is different, this isn't a magic number. Preschool readiness really depends more on developmental factors than chronological age.

In 2014-15, the rules set the age for admission to LKG under the RTE quota between 3.5 and 4.5 years, and for Class 1 between 5.5 and 6.5 years. As per the new guidelines for the 2016-17 academic year, a child must be aged 3.10 years for LKG and 5.10 years for Class 1 as on June 1, 2016.
