Can non-union actors and SAG-AFTRA members work in a production together? Yes, it's just a matter of who gets covered by a SAG-AFTRA contract. Under the Student Film and Ultra Low Budget Agreements, only the professional performers in the cast are covered.
Fi-Core actors have resigned or rejected SAG-AFTRA membership, and as such are not union members. You cannot claim to be SAG-AFTRA on your online casting profiles or list it on your resume. You are a non-union actor with the right to work on a union set.

SAG-AFTRA takes Global Rule One very seriously; violating it can result in disciplinary action ranging from reprimands to fines to expulsion.
SAG eligible means that you CAN join the union should you so choose at any time from there on out. You can audition for SAG and non SAG projects. You can be hired for SAG work or for non-SAG work.
Some websites claim that SAG “makes it too easy†to join, and that many actors who plunk down their $3,000 initiation fee just aren't ready to compete in the rarified air of the union gig.
The SAG Low Budget Agreement applies to films with budgets between $700,000 and $2,000,000, making this the SAG pay scale of most independent films. Under this contract, actors must make a SAG day rate of $670, or $2,324 per week. If you're working with some actors who aren't in the guild, don't worry.
Session PaymentExtras are paid a session fee of $388.40, according to SAG's 2019 rate sheet. This is regardless of where the commercial will air. To figure out an extra's hourly rate, divide the session rate of $388.40 by eight, the number of hours SAG considers the session rate to cover.
The Bottom Line. Simply stated, if you work as a principal performer on a SAG project, or work as an extra (aka Background Performer) for three days at full SAG rates (for which you receive vouchers) you are eligible to join SAG.
You can work for freejust do not work non-union, but movies made for fun on pennies can become signatory and use union talent! You can work on a non-union short being made for funbut either you or the producer has to sign a SAG-AFTRA contract and abide by its rules.

There are three ways you can become an ACTRA member:
- Join ACTRA as an Apprentice Member. Becoming an Apprentice Member ensures your eligibility to work on ACTRA sets.
- Join ACTRA as a Member of a Sister Organization.
- Join as an ACTRA Additional Background Performer.
