The bad: U.S. Cellular only has 10.27% coverage on their primary network. They don't have any unlimited data plan options and their data slows to 2G speeds when you reach your limit. Their plans are relatively expensive considering you don't receive any perks like a subscription to Netflix, Hulu, or HBO.

Straight Talk is a type of carrier known as an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), which means that it doesn't run or own a wireless network. Instead, it purchases the right to use towers from AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint.

T-Mobile successfully acquired Sprint as of April 1, becoming one company and effectively bringing the total number of major US cell carriers from four down to three. At least for now.
U.S. Cellular is the fourth-largest mobile network operator in the U.S., right behind T-Mobile. The carrier owns and operates its own national network, but specializes in providing coverage in the midwestern United States and some of the north-western parts of the country.
For 2G Voice and 3G Data service U.S.Cellular uses a mix of the standard 850 MHz and 1900 MHz blocks. These are the same frequencies used by all major carriers nationwide so almost every kit we offer will cover these blocks. For 4G LTE U.S. Cellular uses the 700 MHz band from AT&T.
Most of the phones sold by carriers in the US are "locked," meaning they can't be taken to another carrier without being unlocked. From the carriers' perspective, it's mostly a way to stop customers from leaving before they've paid out their installment plan.
Verizon and U.S. Cellular are both wireless service providers that use CDMA technology, meaning that they don't use SIM cards to connect phones to their networks. Verizon is a nationwide carrier offered most anywhere, while U.S. Cellular is offered in about half of the United States.
U.S. Cellular 5G service will launch in parts of 11 states during the balance of the year. The carrier says that services are coming to “select areas” of California, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia.

If it is listed as unlocked, then it is not tied to any carrier. However, you'll have to check whether the device is GSM or CDMA compatible. Most newer phone models are compatible with both GSM and CDMA networks and will work with any carrier. Older models may be restricted to just one of the two.
Verizon Wireless will serve acquired U.S. Cellular customers using the existing U.S. Cellular brand name until the network integration and upgrade to 4G LTE is complete, expected to be in mid-2014. U.S. Cellular customers affected by this purchase will receive a welcome letter in the next few weeks.
If there isn't a SIM card, you indeed have a CDMA phone that can be flashed. GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) phones can't be flashed (like AT&T and T-Mobile). Metro, Sprint, Cricket, Boost, Verizon and many others are CDMA and thus can be flashed because they're not controlled by the SIM card.
