Major orchestra salaries range by the orchestra from a little over $100,000 to a little over $150,000. Principals, the ranking member of each orchestra section, can make a great deal more, in some instances more than $400,000. And most major orchestras play for a season lasting only about nine- months a year.
While work in a symphony orchestra is demanding (see below), the fact is that the average 8 service week for most major orchestras is an attractive schedule. Of course, individual practice adds up to make a full work week, but such practice can be done on a flexible basis and usually at home.

Here lies the crucial argument: orchestra players wear black, because the audience wants to pay attention to the music – not them. Many classical music lovers believe that there should be absolutely nothing to distract from the music, not even the performers themselves. Playing in an orchestra is a group effort.

“Philharmonic puts the emphasis on the organizers and the audience, whereas symphony places it on sound and the actual music-making.” Another example close to home: The Philharmonic Society of New York was founded in 1799.
A symphony is an extended musical composition in Western classical music, most often written by composers for orchestra. Symphonies are notated in a musical score, which contains all the instrument parts. Orchestral musicians play from parts which contain just the notated music for their own instrument.
Founded in 1885 as an offshoot of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), the Boston Pops primarily consists of musicians from the BSO, although generally not all of the first-chair players. The orchestra performs a spring season of popular music and a holiday program in December.

For a reasonably priced show, simple slacks, a button down shirt, and shoes or appropriate sneakers are a safe bet. A cheaper show, more relaxed attire such as a good, undistressed pair of jeans, and still with button down shirt (albeit more casual) or polo. A more expensive show, wear a suit.
