This is a true story. The events depicted in this film took place in Minnesota in 1987. At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed. Regarding this apparent discrepancy, the Coen brothers claimed that they based their script on an actual criminal event, but wrote a fictional story around it.
Jean is killed by Gaear. Carl gives a bit of money to his Gaear and after briefly talking, he axes Carl. Marge solves the whole crime and arrives at Carl and Gaear's place. In the end, no one gets the ransom money.
