The best barbell for most home gym owners is an Olympic bar with 2″ diameter sleeves, medium depth knurl, a diameter of 28.5-29mm, a weight capacity of 700 lbs or more, and a stainless steel or hard chrome finish. A bar with these specs will be perfect for the average lifter and last them a lifetime.
Olympic barbells prices range from $80 up to $1200+. The majority of Olympic barbells cost between $150 and $350. A good mid-range quality Olympic barbell that's suitable for most gyms, can be bought for $200-$350. Barbells used during official Olympic events cost $1000 or more.
Cost of a barbell is determined by many factors, Olympic barbells come with an expensive price tag because they are built with highest quality metal to last forever, not only that, expensive barbells also come with better knurling, superior whip, and smooth spinning sleeves.
Dumbbells are produced abroad and due to their weight, they are expensive to ship. This is the main reason, contributing to the biggest part of the price. Dumbbells are made of iron, which costs much more than most other materials used in various products.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic led to a surge of interest in the at-home fitness industry and, in turn, lead dumbbells to sell out everywhere. But post-stay-at-home orders, stores quickly sold out of dumbbells — and never restocked.

Re: shipping a barbellRates are usually $35-45 because it's oversized, but that's generally what we pay and probably a little lower than the general public's rate because of the volume we do. I'm sure some of the larger companies get even better rates. Visit Ryan McGrotty's homepage!
To prevent unnecessary damage during shipping, all barbells are packaged in a thick cardboard tubing. The packaging is topped off with a special end cap that is tough enough to survive shipping, but is easily removed for unpackaging.
