Bottles of beer, wine and spirits contain potentially harmful levels of toxic elements, such as lead and cadmium, in their enamelled decorations, a new study shows.
The only beverage tested that contained no glyphosate was Peak Beer Organic IPA. The amounts found were far below the safety limits for glyphosate set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as Bayer toxicologist William Reeves told CBS News via a spokesperson.

Glyphosate is not sprayed directly onto grapes in vineyards (it would kill the vines). Instead, it is usually sprayed on the ground on either side of the grape vines. Roundup may be absorbed through the roots and bark of the vines. Glyphosate can remain in the soil for up to 20 years.
A study found that European wines were also systematically contaminated with pesticide residues. Decanter magazine reported that ninety percent of French wine samples contained traces of at least one pesticide. No pesticides are ever added to certified organic wine grapes.
The researchers tested 20 samples of beer and wine, including popular brands like Coors, Sutter Home, and Budweiser. Their results showed lower levels of glyphosate in these beverages compared to previous tests of other food products.
According to a 2013 study, more than a third of regular wine drinkers report occasional headaches from wine—and not from overindulgence. Even a single glass can trigger one. But as those of us who suffer are well aware, not every red causes a headache every time.
Glyphosate is currently approved in the EU until 15 December 2022. Therefore, glyphosate can be used as an active substance in Plant Protection Products (PPPs), until that date, subject to each PPP being authorised by national authorities following an evaluation of its safety.
Peeled bananas are generally tainted with very few pesticide residues, according to USDA analyses, probably because those tested are peeled first. One toxic insecticide widely used in banana production is chlorpyrifos, a potent neurotoxicant member of the organophosphate insecticide family.
Wine also contains varying concentrations of metal ions such as sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, nickel, chromium, zinc, manganese, cobalt, copper, iron, and lead . The source of heavy metals in wine could be the grapes, the processing of the grapes to wine, bottling, and storage.

Two years ago, for example, the French consumer organization UFC-Que Choisir tested 92 wines from around France and found pesticide traces in every bottle. It also said France's wine industry accounts for just 3.7 per cent of the country's agricultural land yet uses 20 per cent of the country's pesticide volume.
A recent study made headlines when glyphosate residues were detected in all California wines tested. It is best known as the active ingredient in Monsanto's “Roundup” which is used to kill weeds in fields planted with seeds that have been genetically engineered to produce crops that are resistant to glyphosate.

Does Alcohol Kills Weeds? While many household chemicals, like rubbing alcohol, will most certainly kill unwanted plants when used in excess amounts, it is important to remember that these same products will come into contact with the soil in your garden.
The amount of the chemical found in the tested beverage was minute. Coors Light contained about 31 parts of glyphosate per billion, while Budweiser contained 27 parts per billion and Fat Tire just over 11 parts per billion. Glyphosate is an exceptionally common chemical.
The overall Roundup line of products, which includes genetically modified seeds, represented about half of Monsanto's yearly revenue. The product is marketed to consumers by Scotts Miracle-Gro Company. Monsanto developed and patented the glyphosate molecule in the 1970s, and marketed it as Roundup from 1973.
A study conducted by a U.S. public interest research group found certain beers and wine contain trace amounts of glyphosate – a pesticide found in Roundup. In a study of five wines and 15 beers, trace amounts of weed killer were found in all but one of them.

Used in yards, farms and parks throughout the world, Roundup has long been a top-selling weed killer. But now researchers have found that one of Roundup's inert ingredients can kill human cells, particularly embryonic, placental and umbilical cord cells.
In order for a beer to be certified as “organic,” it must be grown without toxic pesticides or synthetic fertilizers in soil that has been free from chemicals for at least three years. Moreover, as might be imagined, absolutely no GMOs are allowed to be present within a beer certified as being organic.
There are a wide range of grape pesticides, however, including carbaryl, esfenvalerate, spinosad, permethrin, malathion and pyrethrin, SFGate pointed out. Any plant that grows on a grapevine, other than grapes, is a weed, Purdue explained.
