If you have no detergent at all, use one cup of borax or baking soda for a normal load. The clothing will be cleaner than you imagine thanks to the action of the cleaning agents, water, and the agitation from the washer.
Fabric softener gets spun into the clothes during the rinse cycle so it remains on the clothing after the wash. If you put it into the wash cycle with the detergent, you defeat the purpose of using it altogether since it will be rinsed away with the detergent at the beginning of the rinse cycle.
Because of the chemical makeup of fabric softener and laundry detergent, you should not use them at the same time. It reduces the effectiveness of both of the solutions. The wash cycle will clean away much of the softener, so add it during the rinse cycle.
The most worrisome preservatives in fabric softeners include methylisothiazolinone, a potent skin allergen and glutaral, known to trigger asthma and skin allergies. Glutaral (or glutaraldehyde) is also toxic to marine life. Among artificial colors, D&C violet 2 has been linked to cancer.
When you're out of laundry detergent or traveling, you can still hand wash your clothes using shampoo. Note that shampoo shouldn't be put into a washing machine because there's a chance it will create lots of suds and cause bubbles to pour out of the washer.
Yes, fabric softener works—depending on the type you use.
It's an effective way to keep fabrics soft and wrinkle-free. It also helps reduce friction between fibers, which creates less static cling and helps product your clothes from wear and tear, making them last longer than if you were to go without. It's bad for your washing machine and plumbing. As many brands of fabric softener are petroleum-based and contain animal fat, they can clog up your washing machine (especially if it's a front-loading one) and pipes. Fabric softener can also encourage the growth of mold in your machine.

“You can develop allergies to washing detergents you've been using for years,” explains Chopra. “You can develop a sudden allergy to something overnight.”
Best Smelling: Downy Infusions Liquid Fabric Conditioner
If you want something that smells incredible, we recommend Downy Infusions. This liquid fabric conditioner comes in two scents: Calm (lavender and vanilla bean) and Refresh (birch water and botanicals).Fabric softener and dryer sheets can cause itchy, irritant reactions.
Downy® Free & Gentleâ„¢Fabric Conditioner has no perfumes or dyes, which is great for those with sensitive skin. Downy also softens and protects your clothes from stretching, fading, and fuzz.
Choose products (from detergents to fabric softeners) that are hypoallergenic, free of dyes and fragrances, and formulated for sensitive skin. Consider using a liquid fabric softener. Studies have shown that clothes treated with a fabric softener have a potential benefit for people with sensitive skin.

Measure out your fabric conditioner into a detergent dosing cup. When using Comfort Pure, aim for 35 ml of softener per 4-5 kg load, or 55 ml per 6-7 kg load, and always follow the instructions on the label.
You can add fabric softener at the beginning of the wash cycle as long as you have an automatic dispenser. If you don't have a fabric softener dispenser, you shouldn't add it to the beginning of the wash. It could stain your clothes if there is not yet enough water in the machine to dilute it.
When laundry detergent isn't available, you can swap it for dish soap. The amount of dish soap you need per load, however, is much less than you'd use of typical laundry detergent.
You might have noticed on some tags, especially with performance clothing, they specifically say NOT to use fabric softeners. Fabric softeners can also stain your clothes, liquid softeners can occasionally leave blueish or grey stain spots on garments and overtime the waxy build-up can also cause yellowing on whites.
Avoid using fabric softener on certain fabrics
You'll also want to skip the fabric softener on specialty fabrics like wicking sportswear, flameproof children's clothes or pajamas, or water-resistant items and synthetic fabrics like polyester or anything containing elastane and nylon (think skinny jeans or leggings). These are the best laundry detergents we tested ranked, in order:

If your washing machine has an automatic fabric softener dispenser, clean it out regularly by flushing with heated distilled white vinegar or very hot water followed by a rinse cycle with no laundry in the washer. You will be amazed at all of the clumps of fabric softener residue that will fall out.
