Brookfield Zoo housed five Asian elephants in 1959 and five African elephants in 1984. "The elephants had a large outdoor and off-exhibit indoor habitat on the northwest side of the zoo near the conservatory entry gate," Lincoln Park Zoo spokeswoman Sharon Dewar said.

According to Weitzel, Brookfield Zoo was not on the initial list of places where it is prohibited to carry a concealed weapon. The law also allows private property owners, specifically commercial property owners, to prohibit concealed weapons as long as state police-approved signs are clearly posted.

Please note that indoor animal exhibits close 30 minutes before general zoo closing, except for Tropic World, which closes 45 minutes before general zoo closing.The federal regulations for procuring an “animal exhibition” license are pathetically low. Roadside zoos are often cited for violations, including failing to provide animals with adequate veterinary care, dirty and unsanitary water receptacles, and other poor or dangerous living conditions.
Because animals in zoos are killed for many reasons, such as old age or disease, just as pet animals are often euthanized because of health problems, it is beyond the scope of this list to identify every case where an animal is killed in a zoo.

It is disgusting that people keep animals in cages. It is cruel to animals because taking too many animals from their natural habitat and keeping them in captivity is not only bad for that particular animal, but it also affects the environment and can cause terrible species changes and even extinctions.
Zoos Cause Animals Far More Harm Than Good. While zoos masquerade as prime exemplars of wildlife conservation efforts, when closely examined they cause the captive animals in modern zoos significantly more suffering and deprivation than well-being and life enrichment.
Estimates suggest ten thousand large mammals are killed each year in European Zoos alone, never mind other animals. Whilst we keep animals in captivity they risk being killed by the very people who put them there.
Many people believe that zoos are humane and important for education and conservation while some see their existence as inhumane and an unnatural way for animals to live. Animals in zoos have difficulties adapting to life in captivity and often show abnormal behavior that is not seen in the wild.
Although without an elephant in its collection, Brookfield Zoo will move forward with a renovation of the pachyderm building at the zoo, which will provide a new, larger indoor area for elephants and an off-exhibit area for elephant care.
