If a laptop is lost or stolen and the files or disk aren't encrypted, a thief can easily steal the information, so it's a good practice to encrypt your sensitive data, if not your entire hard drive.

- Choose Time Machine.
- Click "Select Disk"
- Highlight the current disk listed under Backup Disks.
- Click "Remove Disk" button. This is NOT destructive.
- Click "Stop Using Disk"

If you store sensitive data on an external hard drive, you should consider encrypting the drive to prevent unauthorized access. External drives, particularly those that are moved from place to place, are more vulnerable to loss or theft than internal drives.
iCloud backups are encrypted but Apple holds the keys, so they can be compelled by law enforcement to decrypt that information. This is why for the most security, you shouldn't backup to iCloud, but do so locally via iTunes using your own password.
