Answer: Your passport is valid until the date of expiration. The only problem may be the entry requirements of the country or countries you plan to visit. Many countries require your passport have 3 to 6 months validity remaining before they will allow you to enter or issue a travel visa.
When traveling to Spain for short-term stays, third-country nationals must hold a passport valid for three months beyond the length of stay. European Union citizens do not need a visa to travel to Spain, and in fact, it is also possible for these citizens to travel within the region with a valid ID card.
Passports are now only valid for 10 years exactly - additional months on anyone's red passports (passports issued before the UK left the EU ) are no longer valid. This could reduce the validity time by several months without people being aware.
As a general rule, passports should have at least six months of validity when traveling internationally. Most countries will not permit a traveler to enter their country unless the passport is set to expire at least six months after the final day of travel.
How have the passport rules changed? Until last week the rules have stated that when you renew your passport, any time left on your existing passport is added to your new one, up to a maximum of nine months.
Six Month Club Requirements:As a general rule, passports must be valid for six months beyond the date the traveler will exit the United States, however, the U.S. has signed agreements with a number of countries to waive this requirement.

The backlog has built up in just 10 weeks since the agency severely curtailed passport services on March 19 to only "life-or-death emergencies." According to the report provided to Congress last week, the department has been receiving 9,000 passport applications each day, compounding the logjam.
Worry not: You can actually get a passport in 24 hours. The newest (and possibly easiest) option is to step into one of 2,000 FedEx locations across the country. FedEx has teamed up with RushMyPassport to offer a speedy new passport or a renewal in as little as one business day.
Those that require travelers to have at least 6 months' validity remaining include the following:
- Belize.
- Bolivia.
- Brazil.
- Burundi.
- China.
- Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast)
- Ecuador (including the Galápagos Islands)
- French Polynesia.
According to USA Today, most felons can get a passport without a problem. This is assuming a person is not currently awaiting trial, on probation or parole or otherwise banned from leaving the country.
Countries requiring six months of validity include: Mainland China, Mongolia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Burma, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Jordan, Israel, Egypt and Turkey.
You will need to submit the following:
- All three (3) pages of the application form completed, signed within the last 12 months, and certified by your guarantor;
- Two (2) identical passport photos taken within the last 6 months, one certified by your guarantor;
- Proof of Canadian citizenship;
- Proof of identity; and.
Routine service can take up to 18 weeks from the day an application is submitted to the day a new passport is received. The 18-week timeframe includes up to 12 weeks for processing and 5 to 6 weeks for mailing times on the front and back end.

Recently expired passports cannot be used to travel from the United States to an international destination or to travel to a foreign country for any length of stay longer than an airport connection en route to the United States or to a United States territory.
A passport book and a passport card – differences
The main difference is that passport books are valid for international traveling while passport cards are valid for traveling to several countries and only by sea or land.Remember: you can apply to renew your passport at any time, regardless of its expiry date. However, as of September 2018, any unexpired time on your previous passport will be lost due to a policy change from the Passport Office. Previously, you could carry up to nine months over.
Passport processing times vary — currently, you can expect to wait between 10 to 12 weeks for routine processing and four to six weeks if you go the expedited route, according to the State Department website. You'll have to pay a $60 expedite fee, if you don't want to wait for routine processing.
