Priests more often live by themselves and make their own meals. Loneliness and isolation are also challenging for many parish priests. With so many people looking to them for support, priests may not always have enough confidantes of their own, especially if they work in small parishes away from friends and family.
Church attendance across Catholic Western Europe and the United States has been in steep decline for the last 60 years. Part of this decline in Church attendance can be attributed to the clergy abuse scandal, but only part of it.
The Religious Society of Friends, also referred to as the Quaker Movement, was founded in England in the 17th century by George Fox. He and other early Quakers, or Friends, were persecuted for their beliefs, which included the idea that the presence of God exists in every person.
Pennsylvania has retained strong elements of folk culture among its diverse ethnic groups. The Plain People—the Amish, the Mennonites, and other small sects—have kept their traditional ways of life based in the teachings of the Bible.
The Religious Society of Friends began as a movement in England in the mid-17th century in Lancashire. Members are informally known as Quakers, as they were said "to tremble in the way of the Lord".
Fewer than one hundred Quaker meetings exist in Pennsylvania; more than half are within an hour's drive of center-city Philadelphia. Although Quakers made up more than 10 percent of the population of the original thirteen colonies, they represent a small fraction of the population today.

The colony of Pennsylvania was founded by Quaker William Penn, who had been granted a charter by King Charles II in repayment of a debt. Penn hoped Pennsylvania would be his “holy experiment,” a land full of virtuous people whose morals and ethics would shape the government and society.

Pennsylvania ranked 27th overall in religiosity with 53 percent of Pennsylvanians listed as “highly religious.” Alabama and Mississippi were tied as the most religious state with 77 percent claiming to be highly religious. “Typically, the Northeast is a low-religiosity area,” he said.

From its beginning, Pennsylvania ranked as a leading agricultural area and produced surpluses for export, adding to its wealth. By the 1750s an exceptionally prosperous farming area had developed in southeastern Pennsylvania. Wheat and corn were the leading crops, though rye, hemp, and flax were also important.
The Appalachian Plateaus Province sweeps across the central and western part of the state. It's a heavily forested area that includes Allegheny National Forest and the Pocono and Catskill Mountains. The Central Lowland Province is in the extreme northeast and has low ridges that were created by glaciers.
