There is no direct connection from Victoria to Gabriola Island. However, you can take the bus to Departure Bay Ferry, take the line 20 bus to Downtown Nanaimo Exchange Bay B, take the walk to Nanaimo Harbour, then take the ferry to Gabriola Island.
There is no direct connection from Victoria to Mayne Island. However, you can take the line 72 bus to Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal, take the walk to Victoria, then take the ferry to Village Bay.

Marine transport is very important to Vancouver Island for access to the mainland of British Columbia and Washington. There are no bridges connecting the island to the mainland, although the idea of building one has been brought up many times. The only vehicle access to Vancouver Island is by ferry.
1. Re: Which Ferry Route is best from Nanaimo to Vancouver? It's the Tswassen - Swartz Bay route that is the most scenic. The Duke Point trip misses the best part through the Gulf Islands, unfortunately.

The Island is 600 miles long, you can't just drive around it in a day or two. With only two weeks, you need to decide if you are going to see the Rockies (10 hour drive from Vancouver) or concentrate on Vancouver and Vancouver Island. You could easily spend the two weeks on the Island.

Travellers aboard BC Ferries leave Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver for the 45-minute ride to Langdale on the Sechelt Peninsula on the Horseshoe Bay to Langdale Ferry Route. Highway 101 links Langdale with Halfmoon Bay, 16 miles (25 km) to the north.
The Langdale Ferry runs approximately every 2 hours and the ferry crossing time is 40 minutes. Boarding the ferry in Horseshoe Bay, your journey to the Sunshine Coast really begins. For forty minutes you will be enchanted by the scenery of fir and cedar treed islands against a backdrop of coastal mountains.
