What is the FSA ID? The FSA ID is an electronic signature used to sign the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and federal education loan promissory notes. The FSA ID consists of a username and a password. It is sometimes called a FAFSA ID.
Any parent, who wants to electronically sign the FAFSA, will need his or her own FSA ID. To avoid problems with your financial aid down the road, you (and your parent, if that applies) should create your own FSA ID. The FSA ID has the same legal status as a written signature, so you should treat it like such.
The FSA ID allows students and parents to identify themselves electronically to access Federal Student Aid websites. An FSA ID is made up of a username and password and can be used to log into the online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form.
If you prefer to start fresh with a new FAFSA, you are free to do so. Note: If you are eligible to complete a Renewal FAFSA, you will be asked to provide your FSA ID, as well as answers to income, asset, and tax questions. You must also update any information that has changed since last year.
If you have an FSA ID but do not remember your username, select Forgot Username. Note: If you verified your email address or mobile phone number during account creation, you can enter your email address or mobile phone number instead of your username.
FAFSA is not the financial aid itself, so you do not have to pay it back. Federal student aid that is awarded based on the FAFSA includes the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Work-Study and federal student loans. The FAFSA is also used to award state grants and institutional grants from colleges and universities.
To check to see if you have an FSA ID, log in to your account. Enter your FSA ID username and password. If you verified your email address or mobile phone number during account creation, you can enter either one instead of your username. If you are able to log in and see your profile, then you have an FSA ID.
If your FSA ID has been locked you can update your FSA ID to unlock your account. If you have an FSA ID but do not remember your username, select Forgot Username.
When should I get an account username and password (FSA ID)?You can apply for an FSA ID at any time, but in some cases, you'll need to wait up to three days before you're able to use your FSA ID, so we recommend registering early.
The Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) is available 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, except federal holidays.
You should fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible after it opens — even if you don't think you qualify for aid — as some aid is first come, first served. The FAFSA application is open for about 20 months, and you can receive money for a school year retroactively.
