Of the respirators in the state stockpile, only the Gerson 1730 and the Medline/Alpha Protech NON27501 respirators do not have an expiration date. 3M recommends that their N95 filtering facepiece respirators no longer be used if five years have passed since the date of manufacture.
Cleaning your respirator mask is recommended after each use. Clean the respirator face piece (excluding the cartridges and filters) with either a pre-packaged respirator cleaning wipe or by immersing in warm cleaning solution, water temperature not to exceed 120° F, and scrub with soft brush until clean.

P100 Masks
P100 respirators are effective at blocking 99.97 percent of oil-based particulates when properly worn. They can protect wearers from exposure to dust, fumes and hazardous mists. They also provide complete protection against non-oil-based particulates, like lead, arsenic and cadmium.The terminology used in respirators means you should look for either P100 or N100 ratings. That is, 99.7% of all particles 0.3 microns and larger will be filtered out. This is the best (most efficient) filter offered for use on respirators, and will very effectively trap mold spores.
The general rule for filter replacement is to leave the contaminated area and dispose of the filter if it becomes damaged, soiled, or breathing becomes difficult. Even if none of these things happen, it's recommended to dispose of filters after 40 hours of use or 30 days, whichever comes first.

While filtering facepiece respirators cannot be cleaned or disinfected, it is still important that you inspect them for cleanliness and damage before each use. All respirators must be inspected for basic function before each use and during the cleaning and disinfecting process.

A P100 rating is the highest for personal respiratory protection. As long as your mask fits properly a P100 filter will block 99.9% of particles . 3 microns or larger.
Many disposable respirators have anti-microbial surfaces, but over the years that they could start to be considered home to germs. Change them out after 8-10 hours even if they're not cluttered.
The useful life of filters and cartridges is not fixed. In the case of the 3M 2097 P100 (HEPA) filters, we have two elements to consider: the filter and the charcoal layer. The P100 HEPA (which stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Arresting) filters trap dust and particles like a strainer.
How long can an N95 respirator be worn? N95 respirators should be worn for a maximum of eight hours and should be replaced regularly.

If cartridges are open or not packed in air-tight packaging, they should not be used. Even cartridges in original packaging have expiration dates that should be checked before purchase. Also, over time your mask can get old and break down.
N99 gas mask can filter up to 99% of the particles 2.5 from the air. Like N95, they are very resistant to pollutants, but they are better than N95 because of their higher filtration rate. The higher the efficiency, the more particles the respirator will filter out.
NIOSH has two designations for oily-based particle disposable respirators - R95 and P95. The "R" rating is said to be "somewhat resistant to oil". To sum up: a N95 disposable respirator does not protect against oily particles; a R95 does; a P95 also does and has a longer service life than the R95.
The ability to disinfect and reuse disposable N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) may be needed during a pandemic of an infectious respiratory disease such as influenza. Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is one possible method for respirator disinfection.
Discard the mask if it is wet or dirty on the inside, if it is deformed, or if the filter is torn. A deformed mask may not fit properly. An N95 mask cannot be cleaned or disinfected.
Expired masks can still provide protection
If properly stored, masks should still be safe to use, according to Balmes. "If the masks are stored in a dark, dry place, they should be OK to use. The N95 offers no protection from exposure to any chemical odors, gases or vapors that one would typically experience in a hospital or health care setting.
