At its most basic, “patient access†is defined quite literally. It refers to the availability of healthcare, the ability of consumers to access care and treatment. Patient access is an integral part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
A unique new feature has been released for Patient Access. You can now request to act as a proxy for children, relatives and dependants that you care for using Patient Access. This enables a parent, family member or carer to act on behalf of the patient with their access tailored accordingly.
Patient Access is a website and mobile app which gives you access to a range of GP services online, as well as access to your health records. Using Patient Access will allow you to: - Book your GP appointments from the website or app. - Order your repeat prescriptions directly from the website or app.
If you have medical record enabled, there will be a medical record section on the Patient Access dashboard once you've signed in. To view your medical record, simply select Medical Record from the dashboard to expand the selection, then select the area you would like to view.

Request repeat medication
- Do one of the following:
- Select + to add the medication(s) you would like to request, or use Select all medications from the right-hand panel.
- Select Request 'X' medications.

Changing your GP practice
- Sign in to your Patient Access account.
- Select Account (located under your name).
- Select the My GP Practice screen.
- Select Change my GP Practice.
- Select the agreement box, then select Link to my new GP practice.
- Enter the practice postcode or name of your new practice.
- Select Search.
Patient Access is a website that displays information from the practice's system and allows you to: View and book available appointments. View your medication and request further prescriptions. Send messages to your practice. View your medical record.
Owned and run by the NHS, the NHS App is a simple and secure way to access a range of NHS services on your smartphone or tablet. You can also access NHS App services from the browser on your desktop or laptop computer. To find out more go to
After your GP surgery has registered you for proxy access for one or more people, you can switch to a linked profile in the NHS App.
To act on behalf of another person:
- Go to More.
- Select Linked profiles, then choose the person you want to act on behalf of.
- Switch to their profile.
Owned and run by the NHS, the NHS App is a simple and secure way to access a range of NHS services on your smartphone or tablet.
When you download and open the app for the first time, tap on Sign Up. Search for your surgery and select it from the results. Tap confirm if this is the correct surgery. NHS Login will open within the app.
Registering with a new GP surgery can take a few days, and in some cases a week or two. It will depend on how your new surgery works, and if they need to book you in for an initial health check. With Push Doctor, it only takes a few minutes to register to see a GP.
The NHS COVID-19 app is entirely voluntary and you can choose whether or not to download it. You can also uninstall and delete the app whenever you like. The app is not pushed automatically to smartphones.
