Frequency of changeinitially, it may be necessary to change the dressing every 24 hours. Silvercel® non-adherent should be reapplied when the secondary dressing has reached its absorbent capacity or whenever appropriate wound care practice dictates that the dressing should be changed.
Antimicrobials, in particular silver, are incorporated into wound dressings, including alginates, for use in the treatment of “at risk” or infected chronic wounds. Silver is used to both reduce the dressing and wound microbial bioburden.
- Recommended Use. Chronic Wounds.
- Choose a Silverlon® dressing that covers the wound bed and up to 1cm-2cm (1/2"-1") of normal skin around the wound. Place silver side down onto the wound.
- Gently remove Silverlon®. If wound or dressing appears dry, add water or saline to the dressing.
1. Gently apply ACTISORB™ Silver 220 Dressing to the wound. Either side of ACTISORB™ Silver 220 dressing can be placed on the wound. The properties of the dressing are most fully utilised when ACTISORB™ Silver 220 Dressing makes direct contact with the wound.
Aquacel Ag® is intended for the management of a wide range of acute and chronic wounds, based on the clinical experience with Aquacel hydrofiber dressing. Various silver-impregnated wound dressings are available for the management of critically colonized and locally infected wounds.
Silver sulfadiazine cream in burn wound management dramatically revolutionised the management of burn wounds in the late 1960s by reducing the incidence of burn wound infections[12].
Calcium alginate is a highly absorbent, biodegradable alginate dressing derived from seaweed. Alginate dressings maintain a physiologically moist microenvironment that promotes healing and the formation of granulation tissue.
Steps in Using Alginate Dressing
- Use saline (or wound cleanser) to clean the wound area.
- Pat the wound dry.
- Place the alginate dressing on the wound.
- If required, place a secondary dressing on top the alginate to hold it in place and to absorb excess fluid.
Wound Dressing Selection: Types and Usage
- Gauze Dressings. Gauze dressings are made of woven or non-woven materials and come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.
- Transparent Films.
- Foams.
- Hydrocolloids.
- Alginates.

Understanding the distinction and labeling different behaviors correctly can help address the problems caused by the behavior. Generally, "noncompliance" describes patients who deliberately refuse to follow a treatment plan. "Nonadherence" is the behavior in which a patient unintentionally fails to follow a plan.
Non-Adherent Pads allow dressing to absorb, help minimize trauma to the wound site and can be cut to any size.
Intentional nonadherence can be considered as a process in which the patient actively decides not to use treatment or follow treatment recommendations. This usually reflects a rational decision-making process in which the patient weighs the pros and cons of the treatment.
What Is The Best Dressing For An Open Wound?
- Semipermeable Film Dressings. Description: Thin and flexible dressing with an adhesive backing.
- Absorbent Dressings. Description: Wound cover with multiple layers, usually semi or non-adherent5.
- Alginate Dressings.
- Hydrocolloid Dressings.
Works well for incision bandages, being non adherent. These are the first non adherent pads I have found that cover all the wounds on my leg when it acts up. These are pretty decent 5x9 ABD pads. They are slightly thinner than some more expensie brands, but these work just as well.
Low adherent dressings are cheap and widely available. Their major function is to allow exudate to pass through into a secondary dressing while maintaining a moist wound bed. They are designed to reduce adherence at the wound bed and are particularly useful for patients with sensitive or fragile skin.
Mepore Dressings now available at Chemist DirectIts skin-friendly, water-based, solvent-free polyacrylate adhesive provides a gentle and secure fixation.
15 Years Experience. “I have been using Hydrofera Blue for 15 years and have found it an extremely useful and versatile dressing. The dressing can be left in place for up to seven days subject to regular clinical assessment and local dressing protocol. All wounds/incisions should be monitored frequently. Remove AQUACEL® Ag SURGICAL Dressing when clinically indicated (i.e., leakage, excessive bleeding, suspicion of infection or at seven days).
Hydrofera Blue Dressings are bacteriostatic dressings that are proven effective in inhibiting the growth of microorganisms commonly found in wounds, including MRSA and VRE.

AG Extra is 9 times stronger and has 50% greater absorbency. But, both dressings are powered by hydrofiber technology so they both are designed to support wound healing. Aquacel has strengthening fibers which locks in wound fluid and exudate inside of the fiber itself.
Advanced Tissue carries a wide variety of hydrocolloid dressings including: Tegaderm, Comfeel Plus, Duoderm, Medihoney, Restore, Replicare and Nuderm.

Tips on Hydrofera BlueIt is important to change the dressing every 1 to 3 days. The dressing should not dry out completely; instruct the patient to rehydrate the dress- ing with saline or sterile water. When the dressing color turns from blue to white, it needs to be changed (Hydrofera, 2012).
The ribbon should be loosely laid into the wound not packed in tightly. The Aquacel should be covered with a secondary dressing such as a hydrocolloid sheet (e.g. Granuflex or Duoderm Extra Thin), a perforated plastic film dressing or an absorbent pad as appropriate..
PRISMA® (Systagenix Wound Management) is the next generation in the Promogran® line. PURACOL PLUS® is most commonly utilized in chronic, partial thickness wounds which demonstrate light to heavy exudate and are non-infected and non-ischemic.
OptiLock Non-Adhesive Dressings. Super-absorbent polymer core. Adjusts absorption to the amount of drainage.
The DURAFIBER range is a new generation of strong non woven gelling fiber dressings with the benefit of clean one piece removal. Specially designed with innovative fiber technology, DURAFIBER features a unique non-woven fiber blend that is integral to its high performance.
Biatain Alginate is an alginate dressing consisting of 85% calcium alginate and 15% carboxymethylcellulose (CMC).
The 3% Bismuth Tribromophenate (Xeroform), provides deodorizing action. It can be used as a primary dressing. Commonly used over topical ointments, skin grafts or donor sites. ADAPTIC Non-adhering dressing removes cleanly from the wound, minimizing trauma and pain.
Sodium chloride dressing to stimulate the cleansing of discharging wounds. Mesalt. Mesalt® stimulates the cleansing of heavily discharging wounds in the inflammatory phase by absorbing exudate, bacteria and necrotic material. This effectively facilitates the wound healing process.
Mepitel, Mepilex, and Mepilex Border (Molnlycke Health Care) feature a unique dressing technology called "Safetac." These products are silicone based which results in decreased trauma and pain during dressing changes. Do not, however, apply an ointment on intact skin because the Mepitel dressing may not stay in place.
