Remove the AC power to the home alarm console from the wall directly. Use your console's access key (or another item such as a small screw) to unlock and open the system's backing. Lastly, disconnect at least one of the wires that are attached to the system's main battery, which is blocky and noticeable in most units.
your system should be fitted with an automatic cut-off device to stop the alarm ringing after about 20 minutes. Most modern alarms have this, plus a flashing light that keeps going after the ringing has been cut off. You must tell your insurers if you have an automatic cut-off device.
The alarm sounds to alert that there has been a change or has detected a fault with one or more devices on your system. The most common fault is usually caused by human error! Spider webs or insects on a detector can also be a problem causing your burglar alarm to go off intermittently.
If your alarm keeps beeping once you've put your code in, and won't set properly – then it's likely that one or more zones are open ( e.g. back door, window etc.), or the zone is faulty. You can check this by putting your system into WALK TEST and see if one, or more zones are showing permanently open.
Here's how to shut down a burglar alarm system:
- Find the panel. The burglar alarm panel will be in a small metal box or enclosure.
- Open the box. The enclosure will have a cylindrical lock on it.
- Unplug power. The power supply for burglar alarm systems is a small plug-in type transformer.
- Unplug backup battery.
If you unplug you ADT or any other security system, it will most likely start beeping the keypad alerting you of the AC power loss. If you silence the keypad, usually by entering your code and leave the power disconnect, eventually the keypad will start beeping again alerting you to a low battery condition.

System issues triggering alarms
Wireless interference, loose connections and low batteries can all be guilty parties when an alarm is triggered in error. Power interruptions, which may occur during storms and high winds, can also set off your alarm. There could be a problem with the power supply to the keypad. Ensure keypad is powered up by removing the 2 battery isolation tabs from the rear of the battery cover. Ensure that you are wearing ear defenders in case the alarm is triggered. If this is successful, the keypad will produce 2 beeps.
